00:00Filipino Broadway star Lea Salonga shares her experience as a mother and an ally to her trans son, Nick Chen.

00:07In an interview with People Magazine, Salonga opens up about her view on her son's transition.

00:12Nick, assigned female at birth, begins taking testosterone after coming out as a transmasculine at 14.

00:19She says, quote,

00:20I want my child to feel safe and strong and ready to conquer the world on their own terms.

00:25On the cover of People Magazine, Salonga stands proudly behind Nick.

00:29She says, quote,

00:30I've learned how to raise a child who is their own being.

00:33The 18-year-old also talks about his ongoing journey,

00:36saying that he was still figuring it out and that the process took, quote,

00:40a lot of crying.

00:41He adds that he had many conversations with his parents,

00:44who were always very accepting, so he never felt afraid to open up.

00:48The mother-son duo will star in the Into the Woods production in the Philippines this August,

00:52with Salonga returning to her role as the witch.
