00:46Rodrigo Duterte's defense counsel wants ICC prosecutor Karim Khan disqualified from the crimes against humanity case against the former Philippine president for conflict of interest.
00:55since Khan supposedly once represented victims of the war on drugs as a private lawyer.
01:00Duterte's defense counsel Niklas Kaufman says in a request,
01:03This request to disqualify Mr. Khan is grounded in an irreconcilable conflict of interest arising out of his former representation of victims of an alleged policy of extrajudicial drug-related killings in the Philippines and his subsequent role as chief ICC prosecutor.
01:19One of the unique features of the ICC is that the prosecutor is tasked to find both incriminating and exonerating evidence against the suspect.
01:27Kaufman adds that exculpatory evidence which would favor Duterte would go against the interests of the victims of the war on drugs, some of whom he had represented before.
01:36He also cites the ICC's rules of procedure and evidence, under which grounds to disqualify a prosecutor include
01:43involvement in his or her private capacity in any legal proceedings initiated prior to his or her involvement in the case.
01:50As declared in his CV, Khan worked as a human rights course trainer for the Commission on Human Rights in February 2018.
01:58By then, his predecessor, Fatou Ben Souda, had already begun a preliminary examination into the war on drugs.
02:05Khan supposedly first disclosed his past involvement with the victims on March 6, 2025,
02:10one month after he requested an arrest warrant for Duterte.
02:13Vice President Sara Duterte says the bloodbath she had expected, referring to the trial where she would have defended herself,
02:22won't happen at least for now.
02:24This as she reacts to the Senate's decision to archive the articles of impeachment against her.
02:29As I said, I wanted a bloodbath, meaning I wanted all the pieces of evidence from the prosecution
02:41and all the pieces of evidence from the defense presented for everyone.
02:47But unfortunately, wala na siya sa pagkakaroon.
02:51And of course, as I said, kinahanglan pangandaman ang tanan na posibleng mahitabo.
02:57So possibly, wala takibalo, 2026, 2027, 2028, na ay mga mag-file na podog impeachment,
03:06that will be another opportunity to answer.
03:11Duterte also says had the trial proceeded, she and her legal team were ready.
03:17In a Rattler Talk episode, Duterte's defense team spokesperson Michael Poa said
03:20the alleged misuse of confidential funds is being handled by the Commission on Audit,
03:24which he said is the right place to address the issue.
03:30The C-Siblings, heirs to the late tycoon Henry C. Sr.'s SM Group,
03:34retained their top spot on Forbes' list of the 50 richest Filipinos.
03:38Forbes Asia says the combined wealth of the Philippines' 50 richest grew 6% to $86 billion.
03:45The C-Siblings are worth around $11.8 billion.
03:48While their fortune fell by $1.2 billion last year, Forbes notes,
03:54SM Prime Holdings is investing $9 billion over the next five years to grow its footprint.
04:00Trailing the C-Siblings is sports tycoon Enrique Razon, whose net growth grew to $11.5 billion.
04:07Real estate magnate Manny Villar places third with a net worth of $11 billion.
04:11In April 2025, Villar top Forbes' 2025 list of Filipino billionaires.
04:18The list includes San Miguel's Ramon Ang at number 4 and DMCI Holdings' Isidro Consunhi and siblings at number 5.
04:25Ayala Corporation's Jaime Zobel de Ayala, Fortune Tobacco's Lucio Tan,
04:29Pure Gold's Lucio and Susan Co, and Jollibee's Tony Tan Caktiong make up the rest of the list.
04:35Unlike the Forbes World's Billionaires' Rankings, this list includes family fortunes, including those shared among extended families.
04:44Forbes Asia says despite the uncertainty brought about by the United States' tariffs and a dipping stock market index,
04:50nearly half of the tycoons on the list were wealthier than they were a year ago.
04:57Israel's Political Security Cabinet has approved the plan of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to occupy Gaza City.
05:03This despite intensifying criticism at home and abroad over the almost two-year-old war in the Palestinian enclave.
05:11The Prime Minister's office says in a post,
05:13The IDF will prepare for taking control of Gaza City while distributing humanitarian assistance to the civilian population outside the combat zones.
05:22Meantime, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. criticizes Israel's continued attacks on Gaza.
05:27Despite its defense ties with Israel, the Philippines voted in favor of a ceasefire in Gaza at the United Nations.
05:33During his state visit to India, Marcos says in an interview with local media,
05:37I don't know what they say in Israel, but everywhere else, I think it is unanimous that the humanitarian cost of the continued attacks on Gaza is
05:49The death, the destruction, and now the starvation that is occurring should not be happening in this day and age.
06:09Fresh from its highly successful Beanieverse World Tour 2025,
06:15P-pop girl group Beanie comes out with its new single, Shaggedy.
06:19Beanie members Mika, Sheena, Aya, Maloy, Gwen, Stacey, Colette, and Joanna say they are proud of their latest song.
06:26They hope it will draw people, especially the international community, to learn more about Filipino culture.
06:31When they listen to their songs, and of course, when they listen to their music video, I want to feel their childhood vibe.
06:39Like when they feel their childhood vibe, like when they feel their nostalgic,
06:42like when they remember their childhood vibe, their childhood vibe, and their childhood vibe,
06:45and especially with our foreign supporters outside the Philippines.
06:48I want to try to research them more about the culture of our Pinoy and the games of Shaggedy.
06:56A lyric video for the single was released in June, but the music video drops Friday, August 8th.
07:14The Pepe Vibrant song is a result of a collaboration between Filipina singer Angela Ken and composers Marquise Parker,
07:21Tommy Brown, Cortlyn Jabray, and Jay Back during a music camp in Davao City.
07:26And that's today's wrap. I'm JC Gotinga. Thank you for watching.
