On top of the news, food security begins with providing essential sustenance that all can afford.
00:06
Hence, the Department of Agriculture has been tirelessly working to bring down the prices of the country's staple grain,
00:13
with imported rice falling to 45 pesos a kilo of late, slowing down food and overall inflation.
00:20
And as our Claisel Partilia reports, the DA's efforts have been complemented by the DSWD's livelihood programs and social amelioration measures.
00:32
Rosaline, a cook at a local canteen, has been saving her earnings to prepare for her two children's expenses for the upcoming school year.
00:42
She's also managed to save on rice, setting aside the extra to ensure she has enough for future needs.
00:49
It used to be 60 pesos a kilo, but now it's 50 or 55.
00:53
Where do you save your money?
00:55
I save it when it comes to school.
00:58
In line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s aim to make food more affordable for Filipinos,
01:05
the Department of Agriculture has lowered the maximum suggested retail price of imported rice from 58 pesos in January to 45 pesos,
01:16
which was implemented last Monday.
01:18
According to Malacanang, this is the result of falling rice prices in the global market,
01:24
coupled with government actions aimed at reducing the cost of rice domestically.
01:30
MSRP was implemented after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. approved a reduction in rice tariffs from 15% to 35% in July 2024.
01:43
The DA reports the price of imported rice has dropped by 19 pesos, from 64 pesos per kilogram.
01:51
The Philippine Statistics Authority added this slowed down the inflation in February.
01:56
Meanwhile, rice retailer Christopher has seen his business benefit from these changes.
02:02
In the past, it used to cost P1,350.
02:06
Now, it's only P1,100.
02:10
That's a huge increase.
02:12
To further assist those in need, the Department of Social Welfare and Development has distributed livelihood assistance
02:20
worth P375 to 25 beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilion Pilipino Program in Santa Ana, Cagayan.
02:29
This assistance package will help expand and strengthen the livelihoods of beneficiaries.
02:37
Included in the distribution were items such as a fish smoking machine, sealing machine, plastic bottles,
02:45
and other materials needed for the production of fish paste and shrimp paste.
02:50
Additionally, the local government of Santa Ana contributed P198,000 for the construction of a new facility
02:58
to help produce fish products for the community.
