WA candidates and parties onto their next steps post-election

Results in the state election still are not official, but candidates and parties are already changing their next steps. That includes a leading independent setting her sights on Canberra, and Labor starting to implement one of its key promises.

00:11The Teal Independent fell about 400 votes short of unseating Labor Minister Simone McGurk

00:16in Fremantle.

00:17Now she wants to run in the federal seat of Fremantle.

00:21We feel as a community that we are going to capitalise on that and take this movement

00:27forward into Canberra.

00:29It's likely to be an even bigger uphill battle though, while the federal seat is held on

00:33a 12% margin, it extends further south east where she's not as established.

00:38It also includes the Henderson shipyard which will play a key part in the Orcas project.

00:43The sentiment is this is a crazy deal and we do not want to be made a target in our

00:49beautiful state.

00:51Miss Hewlett says the upcoming federal campaign is now her focus and she won't be challenging

00:55the state result, despite raising issues with how the election was conducted.

01:00Calls for a parliamentary inquiry into the WA election are drawing cross-party support.

01:04It can make recommendations to the parliament about a senior officer, that being the electoral

01:11commissioner, and the future of that commissioner.

01:15Our priority at the moment is to allow the count to take hold.

01:17I need to consult with the other political parties as well because obviously we want

01:21a process that everyone's confident in.

01:23The Premier's other priority is delivering on his election commitments, including raising

01:27stamp duty exemption and concession thresholds.

01:31This is very much about making sure we can continue to support home ownership in our

01:35great state.

01:36It's also about making sure we incentivise supply.

01:41Those new limits will be backdated to Friday just gone, but refunds will only be available

01:45after legislation is passed through parliament.

01:48As soon as we can bring it back we will.

01:50The place is still a construction site.

01:52There actually isn't officers available in and around the chambers because construction

01:56is still going on.

01:57The new Liberal Party room will meet on Tuesday with Basil Zemplis, expected to be elected

02:02leader unopposed.
