00:00The Philippines is still one of the countries with the highest cases of tuberculosis or TB.
00:13This is sad but the fight against TB is still going on and we will continue to provide information about this disease.
00:20For you, Audrey, and as part of our discussion on World Tuberculosis Day,
00:26let's listen to additional information and remind the internist and pulmonologist, Dr. Ralph Royeka.
00:37Good morning, Doc.
00:39Doc, good morning.
00:40Good morning, Doc.
00:42Good morning, Sir Noel, Sir Audrey, Ka-ISP. Good morning.
00:45First question, Doc, how many cases of tuberculosis are there in the Philippines?
00:54The Philippines is the fourth country in the world with the highest number of cases of tuberculosis.
01:02In fact, in 2023, the DOH estimate that there are around 600,000 cases.
01:11As Dr. Tan mentioned earlier, TB is the eighth leading cause of death in the entire Philippines.
01:20Approximately 70 people die of TB every day here in the Philippines.
01:28Okay, Dr. Ralph, for our countrymen to understand what this disease is,
01:34is it contagious?
01:36How is it usually transmitted from one person to another?
01:43Tuberculosis is a disease where the whole name of the bacteria is Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
01:55We can get it from other people who have TB.
02:01So if they cough, cough, or sneeze, the bacteria will go to the air.
02:08And if we inhale it, we can get the disease.
02:15Okay, Doc, since this is airborne, who are the people who have a high risk of having TB or contracting it?
02:25Okay, that's a good question, sir.
02:28Because not all individuals can get an infection that easily.
02:34So the first group of people who can easily get it are those who are old,
02:40or those who are still too young because their immune system is weak or compromised.
02:47The second group are individuals who have other diseases,
02:50especially diabetes, HIV, AIDS, cancer, or dialysis.
02:58And the third group of individuals who can easily get tuberculosis are those who have vices,
03:04especially smoking, vaping, or those who drink alcohol.
03:10Okay, Doc, what does it mean when it is said that a person has latent TB infection and active TB disease?
03:21Active tuberculosis is the active type of TB where the patient has symptoms
03:30or there is evidence of tuberculosis that can be seen in the X-ray of the liver.
03:37On the other hand, latent tuberculosis is the inactive or sleeping type of TB.
03:47So a person has no symptoms and there is no sign of infection in his liver.
03:54The microbes are just hiding in their body.
03:59So it is possible for this person to have active tuberculosis in the future.
04:06Well, Doc, usually, people self-medicate when it comes to TB.
04:12We think that this is just TB, even if you have trouble breathing.
04:17But how can we know if this is not a common TB and this is TB?
04:25So the typical symptoms of tuberculosis are two weeks or more of TB.
04:32It can also include fever or weight loss that is not intended or sweating at night.
04:45So those are the four cardinal symptoms of tuberculosis.
04:49It does not mean that all types of TB are automatic tuberculosis.
04:56So usually, it is like that, two weeks or more.
04:59And it is possible that there are other symptoms as well.
05:03Doc, you mentioned the signs and symptoms.
05:06What are the signs and symptoms of TB?
05:12So, like what I mentioned earlier,
05:15the most common signs of TB are groups of individuals who are at risk.
05:22The preventable or what we can avoid so that we do not have tuberculosis
05:29is to avoid smoking or to strengthen the immune system.
05:36So we need adequate sleep and to eat nutritious food.
05:44And of course, to avoid individuals who have confirmed tuberculosis.
05:52Doc, is there a solution to this?
05:54What are the treatment options for tuberculosis?
06:00So tuberculosis, like what we mentioned earlier,
06:05has a heavy burden in our healthcare industry, especially here in the Philippines.
06:12But the truth here is that it is easy to treat.
06:15So screening is free in TB DOTS or in our barangay health centers.
06:22And the treatment here is just a simple tablet.
06:26So six months of treatment will also be given free by our government, TB DOTS.
06:34All right, Doc. Thank you very much for all the information you shared with us this morning.
06:38Again, we are joined by the internist and pulmonologist, Dr. Raul Ruyega.
06:43Doc, thank you very much.
