Mel Gibson has emerged as a popular Republican candidate to run for California governor ... and while he appreciates that confidence from voters -- there's no way in hell he's running.

00:05He's been named an ambassador to Hollywood by President Clinton.

00:14Yeah, but there is a role he does not want, and that is governor of California.

00:20But who knew that anybody else wanted him to be governor of California?

00:24Mel Gibson is polling strong.

00:27He is the highest polling Republican in a new poll that's out.

00:31Look at that.

00:32Yeah, this poll was done last week by a newspaper here in California.

00:36But Katie Porter is a congresswoman at 25 percent, Kamala Harris at 20 percent, and

00:42then right in the middle of the pack, Chad Bianco is a sheriff of Riverside County, Mike

00:49McGuire is a state senator.

00:51It's a weird poll to me.

00:53It is.

00:54And I'll tell you why it's a weird poll.

00:55We'll get into it in a minute, but it's a weird poll because this is very theoretical

01:02until people announce and they start campaigning and putting ads on TV, and then everything

01:07starts to shift.

01:08But the idea that Mel Gibson is the highest rated Republican, I think says something about

01:17MAGA?

01:18Yes.

01:19Because he's identified as MAGA in California.

01:22Because MAGA has been very prominent, has been very visible this year, partly because

01:28of tragedy and what happened in Malibu, his home burning down.

01:33But also with Trump.

01:34But also with Trump.

01:36I mean, he's been named an ambassador.

01:37Right front and center at Mar-a-Lago.

01:38I know.

01:39I agree that he has definitely gotten more involved in the political discourse.

01:42I mean, you see him on cable news very frequently.

01:45I don't think that this indicates that Mel Gibson is the star player of the Republican

01:50or the MAGA movement bench.

01:52I think what it shows is that California is an unwinnable state for a Republican.

01:57The last time there was a Republican in office as governor was Arnold Schwarzenegger, which

02:01many people would say he was a Republican in name only.

02:05Many different values.

02:06Babcock, California is shifting some.

02:10The whole country is shifting, I think.

02:13But I mean, Trump polled stronger in California than people expected.

02:18And look, there's this whole movement now against the left wing of the Democratic Party.

02:24And the Democrats are kind of in a mess right now, you know, with the whole Chuck Schumer

02:28thing and everything else.

02:30On where to go.

02:31So I don't know if you're Donald Trump and you obviously would love nothing more than

02:35to actually come out and campaign.

02:37You come out and you campaign for someone like Mel Gibson.

02:39But Mel has said he doesn't want this.

02:42I think it's pretty obvious why Mel Gibson would not want to get into politics.

02:47You don't have to do too much opposition research to to, you know, to attack Mel.

02:52That would be a massacre.

02:54I think I just don't.

02:56It is shifting.

02:57I don't think that the Republicans are in a place yet where they feel like they can

02:59reliably reasonably win an election, maybe in eight years down the line.

03:05Maybe it's possible that at that point, I don't think they're there yet where they can

03:08actually win the California race.

03:11Everything is everything is so on its head right now that I don't think you can say that.

03:17But with the way things are going right now in the country, listen, Donald Trump is polling

03:22at his highest number in the most recent poll, forty seven percent.

03:26Harvey, you got to look, look, if you if you look at the right track, wrong track of the

03:30country, you've got to go back all the way to January of 2004 to find 44 percent of the

03:35people in the country who feel like the country is on the right track.

03:38That's where we are right now.

03:39And, you know, and you look at what's going on with the Democrats in California.

03:42Look at Gavin Newsom.

03:43Gavin Newsom has done a seismic change in terms of, you know, a podcast where he's bringing,

03:49you know, people in the right wing onto the podcast, taking a lot of heat for it.

03:54He's taken positions now that are way more moderate than clearly moving to the center.

04:00But I agree, Babcock.

04:02I don't.

04:03It is shifting.

04:04I don't think California is there yet.

04:05Depends on who the Democrat is.

04:07Let's say it's let's say it's Kamala Harris.

04:09I still think a Democrat wins.

04:17Newsom got fifty nine point two percent of the vote.

04:19The Republican candidate got forty point eight.

04:22So it's an 18 percent difference.
