Sports Radio six ten. Houston
00:08
Texans breaking news. Alright,
00:09
if you missed it, previous
00:11
segment came down. The news
00:14
Derrick Stingley Junior becomes
00:17
the highest paid defensive back
00:21
in the history of the NFL by if
00:23
we're going by average annual
00:25
value by a pretty tidy sum. He
00:28
has a three year $90 million
00:32
contract. Derrick Stingley is
00:34
with nearly all of it
00:35
guaranteed 89 million
00:37
guaranteed according to
00:39
according to Adam Schefter.
00:40
Here's the tweet report record
00:42
deal. Texans all pro
00:43
cornerback Derrick Stingley
00:44
Junior has agreed to a three
00:45
year $90 million extension
00:47
including $89 million
00:49
guaranteed a $30 million base.
00:53
Value per year in L history.
00:54
The cornerback market has been
00:56
completely reset. So the same
00:58
thing happened. To the non QB
01:02
market with Miles Garrett. Uh
01:05
a week ago, he's getting 40
01:07
million a year and it jumped
01:09
over Justin Jefferson. That's
01:11
happening by even a bigger
01:12
percentage in the cornerback
01:13
market now. The highest paid
01:16
corner before this news was JC
01:18
Horn and I think Derrick
01:19
Stingley Junior is is is a
01:22
significant bump above JC Horn
01:25
and Seth. I think that's what's
01:26
reflected here is at the top of
01:27
the cornerback market had
01:29
those days where you got guys
01:30
who are good players kind of
01:31
jumping over each other like a
01:33
little bit and the fact of the
01:35
matter is that Derrick Stingley
01:37
Junior is he's not $100,000
01:40
better than better than JC
01:42
Horn when healthy. He's way
01:44
better than JC Horn. We're
01:46
right and I think that's that's
01:48
a big question and we wondered
01:49
how would the health factor into
01:51
this and that Derrick Stingley
01:53
last year had his first fully
01:55
healthy season and he was an
01:56
all pro and he'd shown the
01:58
potential at that level before
01:59
he just hadn't been able to stay
02:01
on the field. So you can see
02:02
from the Texans perspective.
02:04
They might be a little bit
02:05
nervous about giving guy a long
02:07
extension if if you you hasn't
02:10
had multiple healthy seasons
02:12
and this goes back to his
02:13
college days as well. But it
02:15
also it also is something that
02:18
Casario has been doing pretty
02:20
consistently starting with
02:22
Laramie Tunsil and then with
02:23
other guys like Nico Collins and
02:25
other players when he extends
02:27
he's not going to give him a
02:29
four or five year extension.
02:31
It's a three year that carried
02:34
on the stick. It allows you to
02:36
plan more in the short term and
02:38
keep cap space. You know you're
02:39
not kicking a bunch of spending
02:41
down the road. So I like it.
02:43
I'm a fan of it for NFL players
02:45
who have been whining forever
02:47
about not having guaranteed
02:48
contracts. You can get you can
02:50
get a guaranteed contract. You
02:51
just got to sign a shorter term
02:53
deal. Neil Hunter did it last
02:54
year. Yeah. Neil Hunter's
02:55
contract was almost completely
02:56
guaranteed on a two year deal.
02:58
Nick obviously did that deal as
03:00
well. So I like it. I'm really
03:02
excited for Derek Stingley. I
03:04
think he's the classic kind of
03:06
guy that will probably work out
03:08
two extra hours today instead of
03:10
to sell instead of instead of
03:12
planning a trip to Egypt or
03:13
something. He's probably gonna
03:15
feel that much hungrier to prove
03:17
that he's worth the money. So
03:18
it's the right kind of guy to
03:20
give an extension like this.
03:21
He's he is not going to drop off
03:23
and work one single bit. He
03:25
probably won't. Here's Derek
03:27
Stingley Jr. On the Pivot
03:29
podcast earlier this offseason
03:31
actually Super Bowl week in
03:34
Louisiana where Stingley is from
03:36
on him wanting to be a Texan for
03:38
the rest of his career. How
03:40
important is it for you to get a
03:42
deal done and remain a Houston
03:44
Texan? Well, I mean, I want to
03:46
stay in Houston for I mean, the
03:49
rest of my career really the
03:50
deal, you know, the deal going
03:51
to happen when it happen. You
03:52
know, we still got to take care
03:53
of business. I still got to work
03:54
I still got to be there. Nico
03:55
Collins when he was doing all
03:57
that last year every day. I'm in
03:59
there working out. I see him
04:00
working out. So like, you know,
04:02
that's the standard that we got
04:03
over there with the Texans. So
04:05
that's what I'm trying to keep
04:06
on doing. All right. So that was
04:08
that was Stingley, you know, he
04:09
wants to be here. It's man. It's
04:13
it back and look at the journey
04:15
to arrive at this contract where
04:18
the night that Stingley was
04:19
picked third overall that that
04:21
was I don't want to say it was
04:22
out of nowhere. But that was
04:24
like Stingley was like if it was
04:26
a horse race to see who the
04:27
Texans were taking with that
04:28
third pick in the draft back in
04:30
2022 Stingley was like the horse
04:32
coming up on the outside at the
04:34
very end. Like it was it was
04:36
mildly surprising. I think that
04:38
Stingley ended up being the guy
04:39
only because to your point, he
04:41
had been injured for the last
04:44
two years. He was at LSU, you
04:46
know until this past season. He
04:48
hadn't played a full season of
04:49
good football since his freshman
04:51
year in college. And I guess
04:53
that might be something that is
04:54
you as I say those things, maybe
04:56
maybe makes this contract a
04:57
little scary. I like to think
04:58
that maybe, you know, he figured
05:00
some things out his body state
05:01
and you know, he played all 17
05:02
games last year. It's not for a
05:04
lack of work that he had health
05:06
issues. He's in the building
05:07
there at NRG Stadium, according
05:09
to Nick and others every single
05:11
day working out. He is a junkie
05:13
when it comes to football and
05:15
the things that go into being
05:16
good at football. But I remember
05:18
the night that he was drafted.
05:20
And it was a little surprising.
05:22
It was Stingley, but I was cool
05:24
with it. And I remember Nick in
05:26
the war room that night and
05:27
there's video of this out there.
05:29
Him talking to Cal and Hannah
05:31
and explaining the selection to
05:33
them. And the one thing Nick
05:35
said is, this is a guy that just
05:37
doesn't grow on trees. You know,
05:39
he's unique. Well, I think that
05:41
when you watch Stingley play
05:42
compared to a guy like sauce
05:43
Gardner, who's a very, he's got
05:45
a very grabby brand of football
05:47
that sometimes it's hard to
05:49
describe, but it's a brand that
05:51
sometimes comes and goes with
05:53
its effect. Depending on how
05:55
they used to officiate. With
05:57
Stingley, he's a pure cover
05:59
cornerback. The way he operates,
06:01
how comfortable he is, just
06:03
moving in 19 different
06:05
directions out of his back
06:07
pedal. He does a lot of things
06:09
really, really well. And then
06:11
his ball tracking is what really
06:13
puts him over the top. His
06:15
ability to make plays on the
06:17
receiver himself. A lot of
06:19
times, a lot of times,
06:20
especially if he's got, if he's
06:22
got a receiver figured out, he's
06:24
running the receivers route
06:25
better than the receiver himself
06:27
is. It's all those things where
06:29
you just look at it. And when
06:30
you watch him play, you say,
06:32
that's a true professional
06:33
cornerback. And it's just a
06:34
matter of keeping him healthy.
06:36
The big thing is in his ability
06:40
to stay healthy. I think that
06:43
all of those things that
06:44
sometimes you hear younger
06:45
players learning about how to
06:46
recover, how to handle the week,
06:48
just how much should you exert
06:50
yourself versus overdoing it,
06:51
all of that. Hopefully he's
06:53
learned a lot of that over the
06:54
first couple seasons and that it
06:56
wasn't just dumb luck that he
06:57
was healthy this year. But on
07:00
the professionalism side of it
07:02
and the work side of it, he is
07:04
kind of like it will be with
07:05
Will Anderson, I think. He's
07:07
everything you want in terms of
07:09
a guy who just lives, eats, and
07:11
breathes football. And the
07:13
money's going to be really nice
07:14
for him. But you've never gotten
07:16
the sense that that's what's
07:17
driving him, that more than
07:19
anything, I think he just wants
07:20
to be a great cornerback.
07:21
I agree. I wholeheartedly agree.
07:23
And I will go back to the
07:26
detail I pointed out a few
07:28
minutes ago, that last week,
07:33
where he became clearly the
07:37
highest paid non-quarterback in
07:39
the sport at $40 million a year,
07:41
immediately articles coming out,
07:43
an article in The Athletic
07:44
coming out about maybe how he's
07:46
been lacking some
07:47
professionalism over the last
07:48
couple years, late to meetings,
07:50
not going to mandatory stuff,
07:52
stuff like that. I listened in
07:53
on Cleveland this morning, and
07:55
Miles Garrett got asked about
07:57
that at his press conference
07:58
last Friday about this
07:59
extension, and he next
08:00
questioned the guy.
08:01
Really?
08:02
Yes. And he next questioned the
08:04
guy. And the hosts on the
08:06
Cleveland Morning Show, Ken
08:07
Carman and Anthony Lima, they
08:10
made a great point, which is
08:12
nobody has come out on social
08:14
media, Miles Garrett's teammates
08:16
and said it's not true. We see
08:18
that all the time. No reporters,
08:20
no teammates have come out and
08:22
said that it's not true. And
08:24
Jason Lloyd, who wrote the
08:25
article, is clearly getting it
08:27
from somebody who is probably
08:28
still in the building with Miles
08:30
Garrett. I bring this up, not
08:32
because we're not Cleveland
08:33
Radio, I get it, but Derek
08:35
Stingley Jr.'s contract is in
08:37
lives in the same neighborhood
08:39
as Miles Garrett's contract,
08:41
and you hear not a peep about
08:43
nor from Derek Stingley Jr.
08:45
about anything. This is a dream
08:47
player. Other than the
08:48
medicals, you know, before last
08:50
year, this is a dream player,
08:52
and hopefully the medicals from
08:54
2024 are now the trend, not the
08:56
exception.
08:57
Yeah, this is, you know what,
08:59
in terms of how do you approach
09:01
the offseason, obviously, this
09:03
is going to create, I'm guessing
09:05
not any cap issues this year.
09:07
Typically, these are extensions
09:09
that kick in a year down the
09:11
road.
09:12
So it might actually create a
09:14
little bit of cap space this
09:16
year. I do, I do, on the
09:19
Casario side of things, I really
09:21
do like his practicality, I
09:23
think, in the way he handles
09:25
extensions and contracts like
09:27
this. It's that you're going to
09:29
be, you're exposing yourself to
09:31
some risk because you're paying
09:33
a boatload of money, and you're
09:34
paying a boatload of money, but
09:36
it's manageable in the short
09:38
term, and for any player, not
09:40
just Derrick Singley with his
09:42
injury history, any player at
09:44
all, there's, if you get great
09:46
play out of him over the course
09:48
of three years, so whether it's
09:50
Derrick Singley or Niko Collins
09:52
or Daniil Hunter or anybody
09:54
else, it's manageable, and you
09:56
know what you're dealing with.
09:58
It's the opposite of kicking the
10:00
can down the road in the way
10:02
they're doing now, where they
10:04
just keep kicking the can down
10:06
the road, and it gets harder and
10:08
harder to manage. If you've got
10:10
a good quarterback, and you're
10:12
getting good play out of them,
10:14
and if CJ can develop into that,
10:16
that's the way to stay
10:18
consistently competitive every
10:20
year. So the Texans nailed down
10:22
and get a deal nailed down with
10:24
one of what I clearly they view
10:26
as one of their tentpole
10:28
cornerstone players here for
10:30
this franchise.
