On Saturday, the International Conference for the Normalization of U.S.-Cuba Relations
00:05
began in New York amid the intensification of the hostile policy of the U.S. against
00:10
the Caribbean country.
00:11
The forum reiterates its demand for an end to the longstanding economic, commercial and
00:17
financial blockade imposed on the Cuban people and also calls for the exclusion of the island
00:23
from Washington's unilateral lists of alleged state sponsor of terrorism.
00:29
A final declaration is expected with the objectives of the solidarity movement in the immediate
00:34
future taking into account that there is a two-way blockade by the United States that
00:41
dramatically affects the lives of tens of millions of Cubans and U.S. residents.
00:51
And in an exclusive interview with TeleSUR social activist Iken Ahom spoke about the
00:55
work of the movement to support Cuba from within the United States.
01:01
Every year there is a conference that the United Nations sponsored for the CSW Commission
01:12
for the Status of Women.
01:15
And so the Cubans are able to come in and the previous administrations that have carried
01:21
out the economic pressures and blockade against Cuba in the past, including the Trump administration
01:31
with Rubio, are not able to keep them out.
01:35
So we organize the solidarity movement in the United States, Canada and increasingly
01:42
across the hemisphere.
01:44
We organize against the blockade and we have as the Cubans since they're able to come to
01:50
New York City legally to address and speak for themselves and for Cuba at our conference.
01:57
So we have today hundreds of people that are physically attending and then many hundreds
02:04
online that are working out and uniting to fight against the blockade and join the rest
02:12
of the world.
02:13
A majority of countries at the United Nations vote against the U.S. blockade and it really
02:21
is more of a political and economic war.
02:25
But our movement is inside the United States, inside the belly of the beast as they say.
02:31
So our movement is organized a little differently from other countries, but we feel that those
02:38
countries that vote in the United Nations every year, year after year, beautiful words
02:43
at the United Nations because I go watch them in solidarity with Cuba.
02:48
They need to also unite to enforce politically and materially if necessary what's voted on
02:58
overwhelmingly by the United Nations every year.
03:02
And we have our movement is trying to link up with that sentiment to organize with other
03:07
forces in other countries to pressure their governments to do the right thing and help
03:13
Cuba in its time.
