Centre Stage Youth: Giving young performers the chance to shine!

On International Day of Happiness we visit Centre Stage who are giving young performer the chance for just that. Their mission is to nurture young talent, providing a space for creativity, imagination and friendship whilst producing musicals.

00:00We are the Olympus Theatre, SJS, and we are doing Grease.

00:14Centre Stage gives a lot of young performers in Bristol the opportunity to work with high

00:18class professionals to hone on their talent and also build their confidence and their

00:24teamwork skills. Let's find out more about the production of Grease.

00:29Hi, I'm Manon. We are at the Olympus Theatre doing Grease with Centre Stage Youth.

00:35I'm playing Rizzo, as you can tell from the hair. But yeah, I'm playing Rizzo, so it's

00:40a really, really fun part. Really sassy.

00:43So I'm playing Sandy. So she's very sweet. She's a fun role to play, very kind, and then

00:50obviously there's a very quick change.

00:52Yeah, so I'm playing Roger, who's kind of a fun-loving guy. He likes a bit of a joke.

00:58It started just by doing rehearsals on a Tuesday evening after school or college, and then

01:05it progressed to implementing Saturdays and then Sundays, and it would just become more

01:11and more and more. And we became very good at repeating the same scenes and the same

01:17songs, but every time it just got a little bit better. Here we are.

01:21It's been amazing. Everyone is so supportive, so from our director and choreographer and

01:28with the music, and you make such good friends. Lots of people are in different year groups

01:33and you get to bond with them, and I think it's really come together as a show. It's

01:37been amazing.

01:38I've been in Centre Stage Youth for years, since I was eight, and then obviously I moved

01:43up to the big one, and it's just so nice. Everyone's such a family, and it's just so

01:48fun. It's obviously a hobby, but it's definitely more when we do these productions, because

01:52obviously you can tell everyone just loves it, and even the people who move a block,

01:57there is so much fun. Yeah, it's great.

02:01So, I mean, it's Greece. I feel like everyone's seen Greece, so everyone knows about Greece,

02:06but it's just been so much fun doing all these dancing and singing numbers. There's so many

02:13iconic songs, and it's just lovely to be part of.

02:18You hadn't really even touched drama before, so when I came here, it was a massive change,

02:22but everyone was so welcoming, and they're really supportive. It's just a really good

02:26way to get into theatre.

02:27As I want to go to drama school, I don't think I would have been able to want to do that

02:32without RUV, because it's such a, like, it just brings, yeah, it really gives you confidence.

02:36It really brings out such a fun side in everyone, because everyone gets to do what they love.

02:40It's definitely a confidence boost. It gives a chance to perform on a great scale, in an

02:47amazing theatre, with great costumes and set, which you might not be able to do.
