Kaka-RSP, dengue is one of the diseases that continues to affect our countrymen, especially during the rainy season.
00:08
But the Department of Science and Technology, or DOST, has good news.
00:14
They are looking for innovative solutions for dengue from our own nature.
00:20
Recently, they published a research on the use of forest-based solutions as insect repellents.
00:33
To better understand the details and implications of their research,
00:38
we will be joined by Forrester Florena Samiano, a senior science research specialist from DOST FPRDI.
00:52
Good morning to you, ma'am.
00:54
Good morning!
00:56
Good morning, Ma'am Leslie and Sir Noel, and to all of your followers on Rise and Shine Philippines.
01:04
Ma'am, what was the inspiration behind DOST FPRDI's discovery of forest-based products
01:11
such as cinnamon bark and resin as insect repellents?
01:15
And how did it fit with your research?
01:20
Yes, ma'am.
01:21
Our office is located inside Mt. Makiling Forest Reserve, inside the UP Los Baños Forestry Campus.
01:31
So, from 5 p.m. onwards, when it starts to get dark, there are already a lot of mosquitoes.
01:41
So, when we thought of this, Laguna is also one of the highest dengue cases.
01:50
And in our research, we research different aromatic plants and trees,
01:59
like cinnamon, almasiga, and pili, and other aromatic plants for essential oils
02:07
and their application for possible flavors and fragrances
02:12
because we have the flavors and fragrances from the Forest Technology Program.
02:19
So, we learned that these essential oils primarily come from the secondary metabolites
02:29
that these aromatic plants and trees have
02:32
because they use this protection against other deteriorating organisms.
02:38
So, naturally, there are inherent repelling properties
02:42
from the resins, oils, and extracts from these aromatic plants.
02:49
At first, we put the oils in diffusers for repelling and disinfecting,
02:59
but we realized that the essential oils are too expensive.
03:05
And we observed that there are a lot of processed waste residues after oil extraction.
03:11
In our lab, after we extract it, there are solid and liquid residues
03:18
like spent leaves, spent barks, spent resins, and even hydrosol
03:23
that are still aromatic, you can still smell the aroma.
03:28
So, for us, that's where it started.
03:31
In the lab scale, we can see that there are a lot of waste residues.
03:36
What's more, in the industry, they produce tons of essential oils
03:42
and it's a waste if we just throw it away.
03:46
It will also contribute to our environment.
03:51
So, we converted it into incense
03:54
and we tested its repellency against mosquitoes and houseflies.
04:04
Ma'am Florina, it seems like you used a lot of ingredients.
04:09
So, walk us through the process.
04:12
How did you make the cone and stick essence from your research?
04:21
Yes.
04:22
Generally, when we make incense,
04:25
we need a combustible base,
04:29
an aromatic substance,
04:32
a liquid substance,
04:34
and a binding agent.
04:36
And for the incense stick,
04:38
of course, it's the stick that holds the incense.
04:43
These are the ones I mentioned earlier,
04:46
the cinnamon sticks.
04:49
These are the cinnamon spent barks and leaves,
04:52
the spent resins from Almasiga and Pili Resin,
04:57
and the hydrosol that is supposed to be thrown away.
05:03
That's what we used.
05:05
For the stick, we used bamboo
05:09
because we also have research on bamboo.
05:12
We do R&D on bamboo, on FPRDI.
05:16
We studied the right proportion of these materials
05:21
because molding incense is critical.
05:25
It should not be crushed after molding
05:30
because when you market it,
05:35
your product should not be crushed.
05:37
How will you burn it?
05:39
So, we developed several formulations
05:42
of incense cones and incense sticks
05:45
using these materials.
05:48
We observed the burning time,
05:51
burning quality, and even the fragrance,
05:54
as well as the repellency property
05:57
of dengue mosquitoes and house flies.
06:01
Aside from the insect repellency testing,
06:07
we also used solid-phase micro-extractions
06:17
and gas chromatography mass spectrometry
06:22
to identify volatile compounds and aroma profiles
06:27
that are responsible for aroma, fragrance,
06:31
and insect repellency
06:35
using this incense.
06:37
Based on your scientific tests,
06:40
how effective are forest-based solutions
06:44
and are forest-based products safe
06:47
for children and adults?
06:51
Yes.
06:53
We tried using the test-cage method.
06:58
We took out mosquitoes from the test-cage
07:06
and observed them.
07:09
Mosquitoes and house flies repelled them.
07:18
In terms of compounds detected,
07:23
they are responsible for fragrance.
07:29
One of them is creosol,
07:32
which has anti-sepsis and deoxidization properties.
07:37
It is also responsible for its spicy vanilla note
07:41
that we can smell.
07:43
It also has strong germicide properties
07:47
and is limited in low concentration.
07:50
Creosol is also used as an effective disinfectant
07:54
and anti-septic.
07:56
Furfural is also used
07:58
as a caramel aroma.
08:05
It is also used as a fumigant.
08:09
With resins,
08:14
there are traces of naphthalene
08:18
for insecticide.
08:21
Elemi is also responsible for fragrance
08:26
that is citrusy, woody, and has a comfort odor.
08:32
It is safe
08:34
because of testimonials.
08:36
For example,
08:38
we had a visitor
08:43
who was asthmatic.
08:47
According to her,
08:49
she was only exposed to a little bit of smoke
08:51
and she was already asthmatic.
08:53
But when she smelled the smoke,
08:55
she was surprised
08:57
because she wasn't asthmatic or being attacked.
08:59
She was able to recover.
09:01
So,
09:03
our incense is safe
09:09
when inhaled.
09:11
It is also not irritable to the nose
09:13
or the eyes.
09:15
Those are the basic things
09:17
that we look for
09:19
so that it is safe to use.
09:21
Yes.
09:23
We still have a lot of questions
09:25
but our time is limited.
09:27
Thank you so much,
09:29
Forrester Florena Samiano.
09:31
Hopefully, this will help
09:33
to control and reduce
09:35
dengue cases in the country.
09:37
Thank you very much.
