00:11Constitutional expert Shad Salim Faruqi suggests establishing an Institute of Parliamentary

00:16Affairs to train MPs in lawmaking, budget interpretation, and economic matters.

00:22He said the lack of knowledge among MPs about the federal constitution leads to racially

00:27and religiously charged debates, legally questionable claims, and gender-biased positions

00:32on issues.

00:34Shad Salim also said MPs should have short courses to enable them to interpret laws and

00:39take part in the drafting of laws that could be presented to Parliament as a private member's

00:44bill.

00:45He also advocated for a parliamentary budget office, like those in Australia and other

00:50Commonwealth nations, where independent experts offer free, non-partisan analyses of both

00:56short- and long-term impacts of budgetary decisions.

01:00MPs must actually be made aware of the long-term implications.
