Some are so tiny, they’re invisible to the naked eye.
But for scientists to study and understand what’s happening to this vital organism, they need a huge wealth of data.
Plymouth Research Laboratory in the United Kingdom are using an automated underwater device to take samples and send back pictures.

Getting samples manually using a boat and a net is time-consuming so the team
00:08
at Plymouth Marine Laboratory have just begun testing state-of-the-art
00:12
technology. These scientists are using submersibles and satellites to monitor
00:18
something you may not be able to spot with the naked eye. They'll deploy two
00:23
submersible instruments to automatically take images of plankton as well as take
00:29
samples. By increasing their sampling and imaging to round-the-clock monitoring
00:35
the team will have a huge wealth of data to analyze. This plankton camera is
00:40
called the plankton imager. We've suspended it one meter under the water.
00:45
It's imaging all of the objects that it sees, segmenting those images, saving them
00:51
and then we're beaming those back to the lab so we can study what the instrument sees.
