00:41A new chapter in the trade war between Europe and the U.S. unfolded as letters got exchanged
00:47online on Saturday.
00:49United States President Donald Trump said he will raise tariffs on European products to
00:5330 percent starting on the 1st of August.
00:56He did so via a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posted on his
01:02social media platform Truth Social.
01:06He added that the 30 percent is far less than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit
01:11disparity and that the rate could further increase if the EU decided to retaliate.
01:17The European Commission immediately responded with their own written statement.
01:21It said Europe remained ready to continue working towards an agreement by Trump's deadline,
01:27but was ready to take all necessary steps to safeguard its interests.
01:32It is not the first letter the U.S. leader has sent, as Trump is currently in an announcement
01:37blitz of new tariffs with allies and foes alike.
01:40Trump has now issued tariff conditions on a total of 24 countries as well as the European Union.
01:52Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico has said his country aims to reach a deal with European
01:57partners by Tuesday on ending Russian gas supplies.
02:00So far, Slovakia has blocked the 18th sanctions package to be implemented in response to Russia's
02:07full-scale invasion of Ukraine, expressing concerns that the proposed phase-out of all
02:12Russian fossil fuels by 2028 could damage the country's economic interests.
02:18Fico has said he wants guarantees from Europe that his country will not suffer from the end of
02:23Russian gas supplies.
02:24Slovakia gets most of its gas from Russia and holds a long-term contract with Russia's
02:30Gazprom that runs through 2034.
02:34Bratislava argues that ending the supply could lead to damage claims from Gazprom.
02:39Fico told reporters in Bratislava on Saturday that he wants to resolve the issue, stating that
02:44tensions are rising on all sides.
02:46Russia launched 26 missiles and almost 600 drones at Ukraine overnight, the country's president,
02:58Volodymyr Zelensky, said.
03:01The western regions of the country were hit the hardest, including the cities of Lviv,
03:06Chernyvsky and Lutsk.
03:09Lviv experienced its most severe strike since the beginning of Russia's invasion, the city's
03:14mayor has said.
03:15Meanwhile, in Chernyvsky, at least two people were killed by fallen debris and at least 14
03:21others were injured, including four who are in critical condition.
03:25The latest attack comes as Russia has significantly intensified its all-out war on Ukraine, launching
03:31a record number of drones and missiles in recent weeks.
03:35Zelensky reminded Western allies to impose additional sanctions and said the war can only be stopped
03:41through strength.
03:44A preliminary investigation revealed that two fuel control switches of the Air India plane
03:52that crashed last month were cut off moments before the fatal incident.
03:57Shortly after takeoff and once the plane reached its top recorded speed, both engines were switched
04:03from run to cut off, resulting in a loss of engine thrust.
04:07The report also revealed that prior to the crash, there was confusion between the pilots.
04:13One pilot could be heard on the cockpit voice recorder asking why the other had cut off the fuel.
04:19The other pilot responded that he had not done so.
04:22The report does not state how the switch could have been flipped to the cutoff position.
04:27On the 12th of June, the London-bound flight crashed shortly after it left the runway in India's northwestern city of Ahmedabad.
04:35The plane was carrying 230 passengers.
04:39Everyone on board except for one passenger was killed.
