US to raise tariff rate on EU goods to 30% from 1 August, EU open to talks but ready to respond

The European Commission responded to Trump's announcement in a written statement, saying it remains ready to reach an agreement, while also taking "necessary steps to safeguard EU interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures."

00:00A new chapter in the trade war between Europe and the U.S. unfolded as letters got exchanged
00:07online on Saturday. United States President Donald Trump said he will raise tariffs on
00:12European products to 30 percent starting on the 1st of August. He did so via a letter to
00:18European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posted on his social media platform Truth Social.
00:24He added that the 30 percent is far less than what is needed to eliminate the trade
00:31deficit disparity and that the rate could further increase if the EU decided to retaliate.
00:37The European Commission immediately responded with their own written statement.
00:42It said Europe remained ready to continue working towards an agreement by Trump's deadline,
00:47but was ready to take all necessary steps to safeguard its interests.
00:51It is not the first letter the U.S. leader has sent, as Trump is currently in an announcement
00:57blitz of new tariffs with allies and foes alike. Trump has now issued tariff conditions on a total
01:03of 24 countries as well as the European Union.
