Chancellor Rachel Reeves says a new post-Brexit deal with the EU marks a "really big day", praising it as a move to boost jobs, cut prices, and strengthen defence ties. The agreement, finalised ahead of a major EU summit, has reportedly been approved by the bloc’s ambassadors and follows intense last-minute talks. Report by Covellm. 00:00Today's a really big day. After a number of big days over the last few weeks, we can all
00:08see over the last few months how much the world is changing, but the British government
00:13isn't just going to stand by and watch that change, but we want to shape it in our national
00:19interest, in the UK's national interest, for more good jobs in Britain, to try and bring
00:25bills down in Britain and to try and improve our security in Britain. A couple of weeks
00:30ago, we secured really groundbreaking trade agreements with both India and with the United
00:36States, so we have some of the best trading relationships with those countries of any
00:41country in the world. But our biggest trading partners are our friends, our allies in the
00:48European Union, and for too long, it's been too difficult to export, to bring in talent,
00:56to trade with our nearest neighbours. And that's not good enough, because it's held back our
01:03growth, it's held back our exports, and it's held back opportunities to Britain. And at a
01:08time when we're also facing war on the continent with Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it's also
01:14imperative that we work together with our friends and allies to keep Europe safe. And the deal
01:19today is about doing all of those things. It's about bringing more good jobs to our country,
01:24it's about reducing prices in the shops for consumers, as your costs fall as businesses,
01:30and crucially, it's about our defence partnership with our allies. We're doing this for jobs in
01:36Britain, we're doing this to support businesses in Britain, and I honestly believe that working
01:42partnership, government and business, whether it's on planning, whether it's on regulation,
01:46whether it's on capital markets reform, or whether it's on trade policy, the best decisions
01:51are made when government and business work in partnership. And I hope that this is just
01:55another example of the approach that this Labour government is taking to policymaking. So
02:00look forward to continuing to work with you, but I hope we can celebrate a little bit today
02:05that we're making it easier for businesses like yours to trade with countries across the world.
02:09Thank you very much.
