00:00The decision of three veterans, Tan Kok Wai, Fung Kwai Loon and Phi Boon Po, not to seek re-election at the upcoming DAP elections

00:11may signal the emergence of an unofficial term limit for leadership positions in the party.

00:17Political scientist Wong Chin-hwat said the decision went beyond merely pressuring party chairman Lim Kwan-ying to vacate his position.

00:26He said it also appears to be the start of a new political culture in DAP.

00:32Wong said DAP leaders across generations seem eager to establish a culture of voluntary retirement for senior leaders,

00:41despite the absence of an official term limit for the national chairman.

00:46He said it was clear that the trio wanted Lim to step aside,

00:50noting that Tan, DAP's former chairman, was only three years Lim's senior.

00:55Analyst Asmi Hassan agreed that Lim was implicitly being told to step down,

01:01but said the trio's greater motivation was to allow new blood to assume leadership.

01:07On Wednesday, Tan, Fung and Phi announced their withdrawal from the March 16th election to the party's Central Executive Committee.
