I'm the Development Manager at Bristol Dementia Action Alliance, we're known as BDAA.
00:06
And tell me a little bit about BDAA.
00:09
So we're just coming up to our 12th year, we were set up by Tony and Barbara Hall.
00:14
Barbara was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 53 and at that time there wasn't any information around
00:23
and they wanted to do something to help other people in the same situation as them.
00:27
The main goal has always been about education, spreading awareness, breaking down stigma and barriers.
00:34
And it's kind of grown, we're still doing all of that but we now run five memory cafes
00:39
which are a safe space for people to spend the afternoon with other people who get it.
00:44
No judgement and we have fun.
00:47
So how many memory cafes have run all over the country but it's just having that safe space
00:53
where you can come and meet other people and know that it's a safe space to talk,
00:59
find out more about dementia and just fun.
01:05
We have lots of fun, we have so many different things, we've had animals come in,
01:10
so people have therapy animals, we've had chickens, we've had snakes, we've had dogs, music.
01:16
Music's really powerful for people with dementia and you really see the impact of music.
01:22
People really light up and they can know all the words to it.
01:26
You're opening a new cafe in March.
01:30
So it's a hub.
01:31
A new hub in March, tell me about that.
01:33
So it's Happy Days Hub which is the name of our memory cafes and it's a one-stop shop.
01:42
So it's a dementia and ageing well resource because we want to provide education
01:48
and management of those conditions that can increase your risk of developing dementia.
01:54
So high blood pressure, diabetes, just making people aware.
