Bristol Dementia Action Alliance launch a Happy Days Hub

An important aspect of the Hub is to offer preventative awareness and management of conditions which can affect us as we age and could increase the risk of developing dementia.

00:00I'm the Development Manager at Bristol Dementia Action Alliance, we're known as BDAA.

00:06And tell me a little bit about BDAA.

00:09So we're just coming up to our 12th year, we were set up by Tony and Barbara Hall.

00:14Barbara was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 53 and at that time there wasn't any information around

00:23and they wanted to do something to help other people in the same situation as them.

00:27The main goal has always been about education, spreading awareness, breaking down stigma and barriers.

00:34And it's kind of grown, we're still doing all of that but we now run five memory cafes

00:39which are a safe space for people to spend the afternoon with other people who get it.

00:44No judgement and we have fun.

00:47So how many memory cafes have run all over the country but it's just having that safe space

00:53where you can come and meet other people and know that it's a safe space to talk,

00:59find out more about dementia and just fun.

01:05We have lots of fun, we have so many different things, we've had animals come in,

01:10so people have therapy animals, we've had chickens, we've had snakes, we've had dogs, music.

01:16Music's really powerful for people with dementia and you really see the impact of music.

01:22People really light up and they can know all the words to it.

01:26You're opening a new cafe in March.

01:30So it's a hub.

01:31A new hub in March, tell me about that.

01:33So it's Happy Days Hub which is the name of our memory cafes and it's a one-stop shop.

01:42So it's a dementia and ageing well resource because we want to provide education

01:48and management of those conditions that can increase your risk of developing dementia.

01:54So high blood pressure, diabetes, just making people aware.
