EU Commission to propose simpler, more focused long-term budget: “Choices need to be made”

“The status quo is not an option,” the European Commission said in a communication laying the groundwork for the upcoming proposal on the next long-term budget (2028-34).

00:00The European Commission is taking the first step towards reforming the EU budget between

00:062028 and 2034. On Wednesday, it published a first document laying the groundwork for

00:13a budget that is simpler, more flexible and better aligned with the bloc's priorities.

00:18Of course we need a balance between the traditional priorities, agriculture, cohesion, helping

00:25the least developed regions, but also the new priorities, research, innovation, digital,

00:31greening. These have to be balanced and it's clear that if we want Europe to do more, it

00:36cannot do more with a budget that is smaller.

00:38The current budget which runs until 2027 totals 1.2 trillion euros, 1% of the EU's GDP.

00:55The position of the Spanish government is irresponsible. The debt made for a next generation

01:19EU is not paid back and the Spanish government says we should do more debt. That is particularly

01:24bad for young people.

01:25The European Commission says it will present its proposal for the multi-annual financial

01:30framework 2028-2034 in July.
