00:00
Hi, I'm Michelle Dockery.
00:01
And I'm Loretta Michael.
00:03
We're going to see if we can guess the cast member
00:05
based on who wore it.
00:07
Let's see how we do.
00:08
Oh, you're wearing that.
00:16
Lady Mary.
00:17
That's in the first movie.
00:18
The first movie.
00:20
It's a good one.
00:21
This piece was for the big ballroom scene
00:24
at the end of the film.
00:25
It's also the scene between Mary and Violet
00:30
when Violet tells Mary that she's not very well.
00:32
This actually started as a short dress,
00:37
which was then, which is original.
00:40
So it was from 1928 or something.
00:42
And then Anna Robbins had the rest of it made
00:45
to make it floor-length.
00:46
It was absolutely beautiful.
00:47
And I loved it.
00:48
It's one of my favorites.
00:50
Oh, that's my wedding dress.
00:52
Oh no, no, my wedding dress.
00:53
That was also from that ball in the first movie.
00:59
Yeah, and this was the dress that didn't arrive on time.
01:03
So we had to make a big version of it
01:06
and then the tailored version.
01:10
So yeah, this felt like an ongoing process
01:12
of layering different fabrics to get that print.
01:16
And that tiara was amazing, wasn't it?
01:18
Good tiara, little crown.
01:21
Oh, that's Laura Haddock.
01:22
It is.
01:24
Yeah, that's Myrna.
01:25
Yeah, in this movie, when the gorgeous Myrna
01:28
died, we found this to dance with.
01:31
It's just her arrival.
01:32
And she's stepping out of the car.
01:34
Her costumes really represented the Hollywood glamour.
01:38
So there was lots of fur and silky fabrics.
01:43
And shorter and yeah, more loose.
01:47
But I think it's so, so sexy.
01:49
Yeah, beautiful.
01:50
And she has that little kind of platinum
01:52
blonde sort of Monroe hair, doesn't she?
01:57
Okay, that's me.
01:57
That's you.
01:59
That's from this movie.
02:00
Well, I think I probably wore it in the first one as well.
02:03
Sometimes we wear the same things.
02:08
But this is, I think this is a scene
02:10
where Mary is doing the voice of Myrna
02:16
in the film on my microphone.
02:18
Yeah, it's a day look.
02:20
So this is day wear.
02:23
And Anna wanted this to be a sort of Chanel,
02:25
a kind of Coco Chanel look.
02:29
So it has the double pearls and the beautiful neckline.
02:35
Which was actually, this costume started
02:37
with just that one piece.
02:39
And then everything was made.
02:40
So she can start from a really small detail
02:44
and work her way down.
02:46
But this is one of my favorites.
02:47
I loved it.
02:49
Oh, yes.
02:50
And this is me in the South of France.
02:52
This is one of my favorite outfits
02:54
I think I've ever worn.
02:55
I don't know.
02:57
It's a kimono, sort of boat shirt kind of thing.
03:02
And yeah, that's an original, I think.
03:04
That's a find, to be honest.
03:06
And then we made the silk pants.
03:10
It really was, you know, right for the climate
03:13
because it was cool and flurry.
03:14
But yeah, we got to wear trousers
03:17
and yet break away from the kind of stiffer world
03:20
of dancing.
03:21
I think we got to go a bit further into the newer trends.
03:25
But sometimes we can't go that far
03:28
when we're at the house.
03:30
The characters we play, they seem quite held.
03:33
So yeah, this was a chance to break away
03:36
and show some of the more daring 20s looks.
03:39
Correct.
03:40
Yeah.
03:41
Isn't that the one you were on the poster as well?
03:43
Yeah.
03:44
Gorgeous.
03:45
And the headscarves.
03:46
That's something that Mary doesn't really wear.
03:48
It's not part of her wardrobe.
03:50
It's very much an Edith accessory, isn't it?
03:54
Ooh, is that Cora?
03:55
I think it might be Cora.
03:57
Yeah.
03:58
Oh, I know.
03:58
It's in this film.
03:59
Yeah.
04:00
So I think it's a dinner scene or a drawing room scene.
04:04
And I think maybe she made it more in the first film,
04:06
actually.
04:07
Some of these dresses we carried through
04:08
and wanted to keep some moments of her, like,
04:11
continuity of her life into Japan.
04:13
Yeah.
04:14
It's got like a cape.
04:15
A cape, yeah.
04:16
Something like, it's like a cloak.
04:18
Yeah, Cora.
04:21
Oh, that's Lily.
04:22
It's Lily.
04:23
So that was the debutante.
04:26
So that's Lily James.
04:28
Who plays Rose.
04:29
Who plays Rose.
04:30
And it was this specific design where the hips,
04:35
there's sort of padding in the hips
04:39
that creates this kind of little bell skirt.
04:41
It's super cute.
04:42
I remember Lily was like, I don't even love it.
04:45
But it was gorgeous.
04:46
She was so cute.
04:47
And it was a ballroom scene
04:48
and she danced with the prince.
04:51
And it was very glamorous, that episode,
04:54
because there was the royals
04:55
and so the costumes were quite elaborate.
04:58
It's such a, like, silhouette of that moment, isn't it?
05:01
So specific to the time to have that drop waist.
05:04
And it's amazing.
05:07
That's me.
05:08
That's your Fortuny.
05:09
That's the Fortuny,
05:10
which was the most stunning dress I've ever worn,
05:14
which was made by Fortuny for the first film,
05:20
especially on the poster as well.
05:22
But it was kind of like this concertina.
05:24
It's actually, it's amazing because it's huge.
05:27
But then when you put it on, it kind of goes.
05:30
They're like the only house that make it, aren't they?
05:34
Yes.
05:34
Concertina fabric.
05:36
And would have at the time.
05:37
So it was really special to have one of those pieces.
05:41
And then she layered Anna Robbins, our costume designer,
05:45
layered it with lots of pieces of jewelry, which I loved.
05:48
It was fully in the fitting.
05:49
She'd put one and then she was like,
05:51
no, it needs another one and another one.
05:53
And then the line's not very well for them to see from there.
05:56
But yeah, it was absolutely beautiful.
05:57
One of my favorites.
06:00
That's Cora.
06:00
That's Cora, the first season.
06:02
I love this.
06:04
Forget how gorgeous those early years were.
06:08
So this would have been the Edwardian period.
06:12
And Cora, you know, with the designers,
06:15
they're always being conscious of the newness of the time.
06:20
But they put that on the mother of the family.
06:22
So we often are wearing sort of fashions
06:26
that are a bit later.
06:27
This to me feels, you know, so early
06:30
compared to where we get corsets.
06:32
With the high alert codes.
06:34
Yeah.
06:35
And more like violet shape,
06:37
but violet words from that period.
06:40
And I remember thinking that Elizabeth
06:41
looked like Eliza Doolittle in this outfit.
06:45
And that hat.
06:46
That was the flower show.
06:48
Yeah.
06:49
Wasn't it?
06:49
It was.
06:50
And we had beautiful hats.
06:51
I kind of miss that period for the hats.
06:54
We had fabulous hats.
06:56
Painting.
07:00
So that's season two.
07:03
And that's when Matthew is coming home.
07:08
And the house, the Kamakopolis at home.
07:12
I think this was partly made.
07:14
So it was French lace and it had like a lilac silk.
07:19
So it's underneath.
07:21
Yeah.
07:24
I actually remember those pearls
07:27
when at the dining room scene quite a lot.
07:29
I remember this went into the dining room scene.
07:31
And I think this was the costume I was wearing
07:32
when I was sort of playing with my beads,
07:36
just sort of fidgeting with them.
07:37
And then the hook came off
07:40
and all the beads just went onto the floor.
07:44
And then of course,
07:45
for continuity we had to fix the necklace
07:48
before we started filming again.
07:51
So they had to put the beads on piece by piece.
07:54
I felt awful, but I loved that period.
07:57
And that was, you know, during the war time.
07:59
So there was a lot of black and lilac.
08:03
There was a lot of mourning for the lost soldiers.
08:07
And so there was a real, you know,
08:09
those colours were kind of,
08:11
we were wearing those quite often.
08:13
Yeah, but I loved it.
08:14
And I love the hair in this series.
08:16
It's very different.
08:18
Thanks so much for watching.
08:20
Until next time, be well, mate.
