Every 3rd week of January, we celebrate Autism Consciousness Week.
00:05
It's a colorful and important event that gives awareness
00:10
about the Autism Spectrum Disorder
00:12
and promotes an inclusive society for people with Autism.
00:17
So that we can better understand the importance of this,
00:21
we will be joined by Ms. Dang Uyko from Autism Society Philippines.
00:26
Welcome back to Rise and Shine Philippines, Ms. Dang.
00:29
Good morning. Thank you, Ms. Diane and Dr. P for inviting Autism Society Philippines.
00:33
You're so early, Doc.
00:34
Because this is really a PHD.
00:36
Yvonne told me that I should call you Dr. P.
00:40
Oh, why not?
00:41
This is just a prop.
00:42
Just a prop.
00:43
But thank you so much, ma'am.
00:44
Let's manifest.
00:45
Yes, let's manifest.
00:46
Let's go with our discussion for this morning.
00:49
What is the main goal of Autism Consciousness Week and why is it important?
00:54
Okay. We are thankful to the former President Fidel V. Ramos
00:58
that 29 years ago, he proclaimed the 3rd week of January
01:02
as National Autism Consciousness Week
01:04
where the lead government agencies
01:08
we have activities that promote action.
01:14
Action for everyone, the public,
01:17
to give Filipinos on the Autism Spectrum
01:22
to live with dignity, to have equal rights and access,
01:27
to function independently and to be productive,
01:32
to contribute productively.
01:35
Okay. How are our activities?
01:38
It's fun because it's almost over.
01:41
I just have two things to mention
01:43
because there are a lot of activities throughout the week.
01:46
This is the one that started and ended.
01:49
When it started, we had a sensory-friendly movie showing.
01:55
It was done in 10 malls, 10 cinemas,
02:00
Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao
02:02
in collaboration with 20 of the 106 chapters of ASP.
02:07
And it's great that it was done in a small accommodation.
02:11
The theater was not darkened.
02:13
The audio was lowered.
02:15
The kids could run, scream, laugh.
02:18
There was no noise.
02:20
Then we created an autism-friendly space.
02:23
It's beautiful.
02:25
You know, we cried when we saw the families
02:29
for the first time having their children together
02:32
inside the cinema because it can be very challenging.
02:36
So, it's very simple, very accommodation
02:39
and inclusion, right?
02:41
Is this the one with Elisana De Rossi?
02:43
Yes!
02:44
Elisana De Rossi was there
02:46
as well as the child actor lead of the movie.
02:49
Their movie last year?
02:51
Yes.
02:52
So, I don't think we can compare which movie that is.
02:54
And then, our closing tomorrow, Saturday,
02:59
would be this one.
03:01
It's also inclusive.
03:03
It's a basketball clinic.
03:04
We call it Hoops for All.
03:06
Wow!
03:07
The workshop will conduct
03:09
a workshop for 25 kids and youth
03:11
on the autism spectrum
03:13
with Norman Black and the rest of the members.
03:16
Wow!
03:17
Interesting!
03:18
So, they will modify
03:21
how they will do the workshop
03:23
so that our children can get it more easily.
03:26
And then, at the same time,
03:28
they were willing to go through sensitivity training
03:32
including their employees.
03:34
So, in this way,
03:36
they were given a chance
03:38
to enjoy our kids and youth
03:41
on the spectrum.
03:42
But, at the same time,
03:43
they're sending the message
03:45
of National Autism Consciousness Week.
03:47
Right?
03:48
Promoting action.
03:49
And it's funny
03:50
because those people,
03:51
the very prominent,
03:52
are advocates of this.
03:54
But, I understand
03:55
you've been doing activities like this
03:57
for so many years already.
03:58
But, how's the reception from the public?
04:01
The change is already big
04:03
because before,
04:05
okay, it's a mandate.
04:07
So, the government agencies,
04:09
at the start of the week
04:12
of National Autism Consciousness Week,
04:14
they will make a pledge,
04:15
a commitment to promote.
04:17
But, this time,
04:18
there are a lot of private organizations
04:23
including business organizations
04:26
that are partnering with us.
04:29
So, it's different
04:30
and with the help of social media
04:32
and shows like this,
04:34
we can say that
04:36
we are now going
04:38
beyond consciousness,
04:40
beyond awareness.
04:42
So, what we want now
04:44
would already be
04:45
acceptance,
04:46
accommodation,
04:47
and appreciation.
04:48
Okay, that's good.
04:49
We went beyond consciousness
04:51
and awareness.
04:52
So, talking about that, Ms. Danga,
04:54
moving forward,
04:56
what can the government
04:58
and other private organizations
05:00
do to continue to be
05:02
inclusive in our society?
05:03
Yes.
05:04
The Autism Society Philippines
05:06
is now 36 years old
05:08
here in the Philippines.
05:11
So, 36,
05:13
that means
05:14
our children are already adults.
05:16
Right?
05:17
They started.
05:18
I started.
05:19
Gio is still young.
05:20
He's 31 now.
05:22
And so, now,
05:23
we're going to
05:24
economic empowerment.
05:25
Okay?
05:26
So, we have
05:27
the ASP Autism Works
05:29
where ASP serves as a bridge
05:32
middleman
05:33
between job-ready
05:35
people on the spectrum
05:37
with willing,
05:39
accommodating partners
05:41
who will employ them.
05:43
Okay?
05:44
So, we also have others
05:46
whose real focus
05:48
is to empower them
05:50
economically.
05:51
So, for example,
05:52
our artists.
05:53
We have a lot of artists
05:54
on the spectrum.
05:55
Right?
05:56
So, we not just develop them,
05:57
but we also
05:59
help them
06:00
sell their products
06:02
so that they can make a living
06:03
out of their talent.
06:04
There you go.
06:05
So, it doesn't go away.
06:06
People should be equal
06:08
in their views
06:10
and be on the spectrum.
06:12
Right?
06:13
Especially in this time,
06:15
there's still stigma.
06:16
Ma'am,
06:17
what do people usually see?
06:19
Or,
06:20
before they know
06:21
or become aware
06:22
about the spectrum itself,
06:24
what do people usually do?
06:27
Or how do they
06:28
talk to these people
06:30
who are with autism?
06:31
I mean,
06:32
the stigma
06:33
that we still have today.
06:34
Ah,
06:35
we can't say
06:37
that it's totally gone.
06:39
Okay.
06:40
Bullying,
06:41
or you know,
06:42
you'll hear comments
06:44
from parents
06:45
that,
06:46
why is that kid
06:47
like that?
06:48
He doesn't have any discipline.
06:49
So,
06:50
I'd like to clarify.
06:51
So, autism
06:52
is a neurodevelopmental
06:54
disorder.
06:55
Okay.
06:56
Their development
06:57
is different.
06:58
It is not
06:59
psychological.
07:01
Others say,
07:02
it's a mental health
07:03
disorder.
07:04
It's not.
07:05
Right?
07:06
It's a spectrum.
07:07
It's true that
07:08
others have learning
07:09
disability,
07:10
but they're not,
07:11
because others
07:12
call them retarded.
07:13
Right?
07:14
So,
07:15
it's not all...
07:16
So, it's offensive.
07:17
Yes.
07:18
We know that
07:19
we're not using
07:20
those words anymore.
07:21
Okay.
07:22
So,
07:23
another misconception
07:24
would be
07:25
that there are
07:26
physical markers.
07:27
So,
07:28
autism is part of
07:29
the,
07:30
what we call,
07:31
invisible
07:32
or hidden
07:33
disabilities.
07:34
So,
07:35
when they see them
07:36
in public,
07:37
for example,
07:38
when they flip,
07:39
when they puke,
07:40
or when they cry,
07:41
they think,
07:42
what is that?
07:43
The kid doesn't have
07:44
any discipline.
07:45
Right?
07:46
The parents
07:47
don't teach them.
07:48
But they don't know
07:49
that probably,
07:50
the child
07:51
is a sensory
07:52
processing disorder.
07:53
He's inside a mall
07:54
or something like this.
07:55
There are a lot of lights.
07:56
There are a lot of people.
07:57
So,
07:58
it's up to him.
07:59
Right?
08:00
He can't
08:01
process it easily.
08:02
And so,
08:03
what happens is
08:04
he cries,
08:05
he goes crazy.
08:06
People think
08:07
that there's no discipline.
08:08
Right?
08:09
Or,
08:10
some people say,
08:11
that's a norm.
08:12
They go around.
08:13
Like that.
08:14
But,
08:15
they have
08:16
what we call,
08:17
repetitive
08:18
movement
08:19
that is the result
08:20
of their
08:21
sensory processing
08:22
issues.
08:23
Well,
08:24
I just want to
08:25
congratulate also
08:26
all of your colleagues.
08:27
We see the progress.
08:28
Yes.
08:29
We see the
08:30
result of your work.
08:32
And maybe
08:33
to our viewers,
08:34
to those who want to
08:35
contact and support
08:36
your programs,
08:37
where can you
08:38
contact?
08:39
And please invite
08:40
some activities.
08:41
Aside from
08:42
social media,
08:43
because we're all
