00:00Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has praised US President-elect Donald Trump for his role

00:07in bringing about the recently announced ceasefire in Gaza, Palestine.

00:12In a statement today, Anwar said he welcomed the announcement of the agreement scheduled

00:16to take effect on Sunday and acknowledged the efforts of Egypt, Qatar and the US in

00:22mediating the agreement.

00:24Both outgoing US President Joe Biden and Trump have claimed credit for the deal that was

00:29months in the making, but was helped across the line by a Trump emissary.

00:34Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Whitkoff was in Qatar along with White House envoys

00:39for the talks, and a senior Biden administration official said Whitkoff's presence was critical

00:46to reaching a deal after 96 hours of intense negotiations.

00:51Anwar said while reconstruction is a priority during the ceasefire, justice and accountability

00:57for the actions taken during this conflict remain critical.

01:02He said this ceasefire must serve as a stepping stone towards establishing a viable, sovereign

01:08and independent Palestinian state, adding that a just and lasting peace depends on addressing

01:14the root causes of this conflict.
