Humanitarian crisis in Haiti worsens with more than one million displaced persons

More than one million people are internally displaced in Haiti, according to figures released by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). teleSUR

00:00Haiti is facing one of the most serious displacement crises in its recent history.

00:04According to the International Organization for Migration, more than one million people

00:09left their homes in 2024. The United Nations organization identifies the wave of violence

00:15imposed by criminal groups as the root cause. Port-au-Prince, the capital of the country,

00:20is one of the cities most affected by the phenomenon, given that over 80% of the city

00:26is controlled by the coalition of criminal groups living together.

00:30According to Kennedy Akoth, the spokesperson for the IOM, the numbers will have tripled when

00:37compared to 2023, especially in the capital, where displacement has increased by 87%.

00:44In December 2023, we did record around 315,000 people who were displaced from the violence.

00:57One year since then, we have seen the number tripled to over a million people who have now

01:03been displaced because of gang violence in Haiti. This is a really troubling number,

01:10and it represents the security situation that most Haitians are currently facing.
