00:15reinforced for Alvaro Uribe's case judge Sandra Heredia. The Argentine government orders the
00:24sale of 100% of Intercargo, the state-owned ramp services company.
00:36And Palestinian health authorities warned that the death toll from Israel's genocide in Gaza is
00:40nearly 60,000, while the number of deaths from starvation has risen to 147.
00:51Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from De La Sous Studios in Havana,
00:56Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:10A Colombian court has found the country's former president, Alvaro Uribe, guilty of witness tampering.
01:15Uribe, who served as president from 2002 to 2010, was convicted on Monday of trying to
01:21persuade witnesses to lie for him in a separate investigation and the prosecutor is asking
01:26for a nine-year prison sentence. The case dates back to 2012, when Uribe accused
01:31the left-wing senator, Ivan Cepeda, of hatching a plot to falsely link him to right-wing parliamentary
01:37groups in the country. The court decided against prosecuting Cepeda and pursued his claims against
01:43Uribe, who becomes Colombia's first-ever former head of state to be convicted of a crime.
01:51The National Protection Union of Colombia issued a statement reporting that security would
01:59be reinforced for Alvaro Uribe's case judge Sandra Heredia. A request for protective measures
02:05was submitted on February 11, and after a risk assessment, the unit concluded it was necessary
02:10to strengthen the 44th criminal circuit judge's protection. In recent dates, media related to
02:15the former president, who has been found guilty of witness tampering and procedural fraud in
02:20a landmark trial on Monday, were dedicated to profile the magistrates in addition to publishing
02:26her personal family information.
02:27on Monday, the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, denied that there is political persecution
02:39from his government against former president Alvaro Uribe. This in response to the accusation
02:43of a senator of the party of Uribe, who accused the head of state of influencing the judicial decision
02:48against the former president. In this context, President Petro wrote on his ex-account that his
02:54government does not persecute anyone for political, sexual, gender, or religious reasons, emphasizing
02:59that he does not pressure the justice system, which is completely independent from the government.
03:04President Petro also criticized journalism for its work during the judicial process against
03:09Uribe and the pressures exerted against the judge Sandra Lidiana Heredia.
03:14In addition, Colombian President Gustavo Petro firmly responded to statements made by U.S. Secretary
03:22of State Marcos Rubio, who had criticized the court ruling against former President Alvaro
03:27Uribe. Through his social media accounts, the Secretary of State asserted that Uribe was
03:31a victim of persecution by radical judges, claiming that his only crime was defending his country.
03:37The Colombian President responded quickly, describing these statements as unacceptable interference
03:42in the country's internal affairs. He emphasized that the world must respect Colombia's judges
03:47and recalled that many magistrates have been murdered for their commitment to justice.
03:52Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio, joining the rejection, pointed out that Rubio's
03:56comments were an attack on Colombia's sovereignty.
04:06In other topics, during the 61st meeting of the OPEC and OPEC Plus Joint Ministerial Monitoring
04:10Committee in Venezuela reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining stability in the global energy
04:15market. The Minister of Hydrocarbons, Delce Rodriguez, emphasized the importance of reviewing
04:21recent trends in crude oil supply and demand, particularly given the uncertainties and pressures
04:26currently facing the global economy. During the meeting, the established production quotas
04:30were evaluated and ways to enhance transparency and coordination among member countries were discussed.
04:36According to a report by the International Energy Agency, OPEC Plus, countries increased their
04:40oil production by 1.2 million barrels per day in June.
04:43And Chinese authorities reported that flash floods have claimed 34 lives so far. In addition, local officials
04:49stated having evacuated more than 80,000 people in Beijing, including 17,000 inhabitants living in
04:51North Colombia, in North Colombia.
04:52In addition, local officials stated having evacuated more than 80,000 people in Beijing, including 17,000 inhabitants
04:56And Chinese authorities reported that flash floods have claimed 34 lives so far.
05:05In addition, local officials stated having evacuated more than 80,000 people in Beijing,
05:10including 17,000 inhabitants living in the northeast of the capital.
05:14Moreover, they warned that the flood could rise as a result of there might be people trapped under a landslide in a rural area of Luanping County.
05:26Meanwhile, the U.S. Weather Service issued warnings due to high temperatures with a real field of over 49 degrees Celsius.
05:33Authorities recommend to urgently reduce time exposure to the sun and to keep constantly hydrated.
05:39They also urge to strengthen prevention measures for the elderly and children who are most vulnerable in the face of temperature spikes.

06:48In Venezuela, thousands of communes participate in an unprecedented exercise of direct democracy
06:54waiting to decide on projects to improve their standard of living with funds provided by the
06:58state. A correspondent Adriana Cibore brings us closer to the life of these communes in another
07:03episode of Venezuela on the Move.
07:09Hello, how are you? I imagine that you have heard about the communes. In Venezuela there are 5,338
07:16of them. The residents go to the polls at least three times a year to choose directly what project
07:21to carry out in their locality. For example, if they need to build a sports center or if a street
07:26needs to be repaired. The population decides on public policies. They receive a budget and they
07:32manage it themselves. There are no intermediaries. It's a form of direct democracy. Through Venezuela
07:38on the Move, I want to introduce you to Aníbal, a man from the countryside and two young men,
07:43New England and your men. If you want to know what they have in common, stay with us to find out.
07:49Let's take a trip to a place in Venezuela little known abroad.
07:58We are communeros. I believe that everything must come out from the commune. There will have to be a
08:04moment when the commune becomes the guarantee for all these things. Everything related to its production,
08:09its economy, its social life, the maintenance of its green areas, the generation of its wealth
08:15and the provider of its tranquility. A solid place with the capacity to generate wealth for our homes.
08:23I really believe that people are wise and I have always said it because the community knows what is
08:27best for it. People know what is best for them and when they vote for a project it is because they
08:33have already decided that that project is the right one to suit their people's needs. It has been like
08:37that and there we go. It is the practice of direct democracy. In the last consultation in his area,
08:46he, as the majority, decided for the restoration of a health center. The funds are sent by the central
08:51government and are managed by the commune. While we go around the place, Aníbal tells us about the
08:59change in his life. He was in a private company, then he was a civil servant, but since seven years ago,
09:07he has been running this farm in what once was a wasteland. Here he breeds animals with the hope of
09:13expanding and generating more employment for the neighbors. Because if a person or a family is
09:20economically well, their children can also go to school and they go to high school and later to the
09:26university. So in that way we are supporting their homes, their families and their economies.
09:33And when their economy is well, everything is fine and their children are well. They can be well
09:38educated, well fed and healthy. And it's the young people who are precisely trying to make their dreams
09:46come true, always with the idea of growing. The perfect community for me is the one where everybody is
09:53united. We should be a territorial farmers organization, because that's what we want as farmers.
10:00There are many farmers here, but they are dispersed. And what I want is for all of us to be together,
10:07so that we can all produce and earn the same, so that we don't lack anything in the community,
10:12and to respect the environment, to respect the plants, to respect the areas that cannot be forested.
10:17We have all that knowledge here in our community. They put their knowledge at the service of every
10:26corner of their neighborhood, which is located in a mountain and surrounded by large buildings.
10:31They dedicate themselves to recycle and clean up their lands and even grow medicinal plants.
10:37We are learning to be able to tell our children and our youth that it is possible to make an ecological
10:47path in our parish. By parish, they mean a locality or neighborhood. The most important thing for them
10:55is the citizens' participation. The constitution of this Caribbean nation established a direct democracy
11:02since 1999, a practice that has strengthened in the past year. One of the popular consultations
11:07carried out in 2025 was considered unprecedented in the country, when young people from the age of 15
11:13in a protagonist role chose from 37,000 initiatives the ones they considered the best to improve their
11:19lives. And with this direct vote, I wrap up for today. But you can keep following us through our
11:23multi-platform. The journey continues with Venezuela on the move.
11:26On Monday, the World Vision Organization published an urgent report revealing the humanitarian crisis
11:33facing children in Haiti. The study, which is based on the testimony of 840 displaced individuals,
11:39reveals that 71.6 percent of surveyed children have experienced hunger and one in three has dropped out
11:45of school. Additionally, 43.5 percent exhibit symptoms of trauma and 50 percent of families have experienced
11:51direct violence. Violence from criminal groups, hunger and institutional neglect have created a moral
11:58crisis in the country that threatens the future of an entire generation. In this context, the World Vision
12:03Organization is calling on the international community to take urgent and decisive action in response
12:08to this critical situation.
12:10And on Monday, President Donald Trump confirmed that he had never visited the private islands of the late
12:22sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Trump added that he had turned down an invitation to visit the islands.
12:28These statements are part of the President's efforts to distance himself from Epstein, with whom he was
12:33closed in the 1990s. The President has also changed his story about how their relationship ended.
12:40Initially, his advisors claimed that he expelled Epstein from his Florida residence because of his
12:44inappropriate behavior. However, now the President says he banned Epstein because he hired his employees.
12:50He did not provide names or details. The President and some of his allies have fueled conspiracy
12:56theories about Epstein's death, creating tensions even among his supporters.
13:05And U.S. and Chinese delegations met Tuesday on their second day of talks in Stockholm,
13:09to settle long-standing economic disputes and avert an escalating trade war between
13:14the two biggest global economies. The encounter may not have immediate huge breakthroughs. However,
13:20both sides could set again another extension of a tariff truce as they
13:23went accomplished on their second round of negotiations in mid-May this year.
13:27This time, the meeting was held at the office of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson,
13:32who is the host and also mediator in this dispute. In this context, the U.S. and Chinese
13:36representatives could manage to plan a meeting between their presidents, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping,
13:40respectively.
13:47And on Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov found that the new trade agreement
13:51between the United States and the European Union will accelerate the deindustrialization
13:55of the oil continent. During his speech at the 11th Pan-Russian Unionville Educational Forum,
14:01Lavrov stressed that the cost of energy supplies from the U.S. would be significantly higher than
14:07those of Russian resources, a fact he considers would have serious consequences for the European
14:12productive system. The Russian Foreign Minister criticized the European authorities for their
14:17position on the signing of a treaty that would involve more expenses, even though it would have a
14:23negative impact on social welfare in their countries.
14:39The Foreign Intelligence Service of Russia revealed that U.S. and U.K. delegations met to discuss
14:44ousting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky from his post. The Russian entity further detailed that
14:50the aforesaid delegations held talks with senior Ukrainian military commanders to nominate former
14:55commander-in-chief of the armed forces and Ukrainian ambassador to the United Kingdom,
14:59Valery Saduzny, as a possible representative for Zelensky. On the meeting, participants agreed
15:04that Zelensky's removal was necessary and key to restoring relations between Kyiv and its Western
15:10partners, namely the United States. Meanwhile, Russian intelligence service indicated that Zelensky's
15:15attempt to limit Ukrainian anti-corruption institutions was the pretext for the West to
15:20plan to oust him.
15:31And the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry announced Monday the suspension of its obligations on
15:35the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe in a new step towards strengthening its defense
15:41capabilities. This decision was made following the recent suspension of Ukrainian participation in the
15:46Ottawa Convention, which prohibits the use of anti-personnel mines. Authorities reported to speed
15:51up the process of allegations of several international treaties signed with Russia, Belarus, and in the
15:55context of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The CFE Treaty, signed in 1990 and adopted in 1997,
16:02imposes strict limits on the number of conventional weapons and equipment with the aim of ensuring a military
16:07balance in Europe after the Cold War.
