00:00Iran launched a new barrage of at least 25 missiles against Israeli targets in the occupied Palestinian territories.
00:17The Palestinian Authority reported nearly 70 fatalities and over 200 injuries in the last 24 hours following Israeli troop bombardment of the Gaza Strip.
00:30And in Mexico, Hurricane Eric made landfall in the state of Oaxaca as a Category 3 storm, bringing heavy rains and floods.
00:47Hello and welcome to From the South. My name is Belen de los Santos. I'm from Acero Estorios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:00We now begin with the information. A new barrage of Iranian missiles struck several Israeli cities on Thursday morning.
01:15Various media outlets reported that Iran has launched a average of at least 25 missiles against Israeli targets in the occupied Palestinian territories, making it one of the most powerful Iranian retaliatory attacks since June 13th.
01:31Sirens sounded in Tel Aviv, ordering the population to flee to shelters.
01:38Despite censorship by the Israeli regime, images on social media showed the failure of the air defense systems, also known as the Iron Dome.
01:48According to Israeli media, at least 60 people have been injured and direct hits have been reported against targets in the cities of Tel Aviv, Ramadgan, Holon and Beersheba.
02:00In this context, the IRNA News Agency reported that one of the strikes targeted the command and intelligence headquarters of the Israeli occupation forces and the Gav Yam Advanced Technology Park in the city of Beersheba.
02:18They also specified that the center's attack housed thousands of military personnel and included the digital command, cyber operations and surveillance and reconnaissance systems used by Sionist troops in their genocidal campaign against the Gaza Strip.
02:36In this regard, they reported that the Soroka Hospital in the same locality was also affected by the shockwave and suffered minor damage.
02:46On the other hand, the stock exchange building in Ramadgan, Israel's economic center located east of Tel Aviv, was also targeted.
02:54The Iranian government accused Israel of deploying ineffective defense systems in urban areas in order to target civilians and justified increased aggression.
03:09The Islamic Revolutionary Guard denounced Israel for turning its territory into military barracks, generating a state of desperation and fear among the civilian population.
03:20Regarding this issue, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Kats points the finger at Iran for attacks on hospitals and residential buildings in order to evade responsibility.
03:33The Iranian authorities claimed that the target of the mentioned attacks was the command and intelligence headquarters of the Sionist forces next to the Army Intelligence Camp in the Gav Yam Technology Park near a medical center.
03:47In this context, let us recall that last Monday, Israel directly bombed the Farabay Hospital in the city of Qadamanshah, western Iran.
04:01The attack caused significant damage and much of the medical equipment was rendered useless.
04:08In addition, the explosion broke windows and injured several patients hospitalized in the affected areas.
04:14The intensive care unit was one of the most damaged and structural damage to the building was also reported.
04:25And on the other hand, since the start of Israel's genocidal campaign against the Palestinian population, hospitals in Gaza have been systematically destroyed, causing the collapse of the health care system.
04:39The World Health Organization reported that only 19 of the 36 hospitals in Gaza continue to function, at least partially, while 94% of them have suffered serious damage or have been completely destroyed.
04:55In addition, around 1,500 humanitarian workers have been killed by the occupation army.
05:00And following international outcry for the recent Iranian strikes on Israeli strategic facilities,
05:12Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez denounced the double standards in the treatment of the Iran-Israel conflict.
05:18In this regard, through a post on his social media ex, Rodriguez asked,
05:24where are those who claimed that there is never any justification for one state to launch a preemptive attack on another?
05:32And the Cuban diplomat also finished by asking,
05:36are there then good and bad preemptive attacks, double standards or complicity with the aggressor?
05:48Once again, media outlets aligned with international Zionism have tried to manipulate reality by claiming that Iranian helicopter gunships were attacked in Kermansha province.
06:00However, available images and evidence show that the target of the alleged attack was a replica.
06:07There is no record of secondary explosions that would confirm diversion disseminated by these sources.
06:14The Iranian armed forces have reiterated that their strategic equipment is under maximum security.
06:20Likewise, the Islamic Republic has assured that it will respond firmly to any act of aggression by the Zionists.
06:44And we now turn our focus towards the situation in Palestine,
06:53as the Palestinian Authority reported nearly 70 fatalities and over 200 injuries in the last 24 hours
07:00following Israeli troops' bombardment of the Gaza Strip.
07:04The Palestinian Health Ministry reported that 12 civilians, including three children,
07:09were killed in an attack on tents, housing displaced people in the Al-Shadi refugee camp.
07:16More than two more were killed by an Israeli bombardment on a street in Al-Hala, west of Gaza.
07:25Israel's ongoing genocide has left more than 55,000 victims,
07:31despite calls from the international community for an immediate ceasefire.
07:36Also in Palestine, soldiers occupying the area opened fire on crowds seeking humanitarian aid,
07:50killing 10 civilians.
07:52Sinus forces fired machine guns and drones at Palestinians seeking food aid near Nezareem,
07:59leaving at least 60 people wounded.
08:01The enclave has been experiencing a catastrophic humanitarian crisis
08:05since the Zionist regime closed all crossings
08:09and denied entry of food, medicine, humanitarian aid and fuel into the Strip.
08:18And now we have a short break coming up, but first, remember you can join us on TikTok at Tells for English,

08:31Welcome back from the South.
08:50The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed on Thursday the latest prisoner swap with Ukraine
08:55as part of a deal reached earlier in June at peace negotiations in Istanbul, Tokiya.
09:01According to the authority, the group of Russian servicemen was returned from the territory controlled by the Kiev regime
09:08and exchanged for a group of Ukrainian armed forces soldiers.
09:13The militiamen are currently on Belarusian territory,
09:16where they are reportedly being provided with the necessary medical and psychological assistance.
09:22In addition, the Eurasian nation's defense ministry informed that the servicemen will be soon transported to Russia
09:29for treatment and rehabilitation at the institution's medical facilities.
09:34And at a briefing with international news agencies on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed its readiness
09:46to continue negotiations with Ukraine, noting that the previous round of talks had paved the way
09:52for the current exchange of prisoners.
09:55We don't care who leads the negotiations, even if it's the current head of the regime.
10:04I'm even ready to meet, but only if it's some kind of final stage,
10:09so that we are not sitting there endlessly dividing something, but putting a full stop.
10:16There must be a signature of a legitimate authority.
10:23We are ready to continue these negotiations.
10:26Right now, on the humanitarian track, the situation overall is such that these negotiations make sense.
10:32And we stay in Russia as the 28th edition of the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg continues on its second day
10:58with the presence of at least 140 countries and the attendance of more than 20,000 people.
11:04On June 19th, a number of activities are being held, including an important meeting of university representatives
11:11from around the world who discuss a new teaching model, the progress of technology in service to society
11:18and Russia's role in the era of trade wars that is also being discussed.
11:23These activities continue until June 21st and are centered around the theme
11:29Shared Values, the Basis for Growth in a Multipolar World, featuring Bahrain as the guest country.
11:42In other news, President Xi Jinping urged the advancement of the construction of a community
11:48with Central Asian countries and the promotion of trade cooperation through the Belt and Road Initiative.
11:55In his opening speech at the second China-Central Asia Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan,
12:01the president emphasized the strengthening of ties of friendship and cooperation among Asian nations.
12:06He emphasized that these six member countries seek to promote modernization
12:11through high-quality win-win collaborations based on mutual respect and mutual benefit.
12:17He announced that China and the Central Asian countries would sign a treaty of good neighborliness
12:23and permanent-friendly cooperation to promote security and stability in the region.
12:28And we now move on to other topics.
12:46In Mexico, Hurricane Eric made landfall in the state of Huaxaca on Thursday
12:50as a Category 3 storm on the Zafir-Simpson scale, triggering heavy rains and floods.
12:56The storm hit the municipality of Pinotepa Nacional at 5.30 a.m. local time
13:03with maximum sustained wind gusts of 205 kilometers per hour,
13:08leaving extensive material damage, road closures and flooding in at least 14 municipalities of the state.
13:16As consequence, high waves are being reported in Puerto Escondido,
13:20while in Huatulco authorities informed water has entered homes and hospitals.
13:26Despite the magnitude of the phenomenon, authorities have yet to confirm any fatalities,
13:31but one person was injured by a falling fence.
13:35As the storm barrages through the territory, there have also been reports of power outages.
13:41Precisely in this context, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that all activities were suspended
13:51until further notice after Hurricane Eric arrived on the coast of Guerrero and Oaxaca this Thursday.
13:58All activities have been absolutely suspended.
14:04The recommendations are to take shelter in your homes, not to go out, and to stay together as a family.
14:11If you live near rivers or in low-lying areas, move to the shelters.
14:15Stay together and stay informed through official channels.
14:18A volcano in eastern Indonesia erupted, blanketing the sky with a cloud of ash more than six miles high
14:41and forcing authorities to raise the country's volcanic alert level.
14:45Mount Lewatobi-Laki-Laki began erupting, spewing ash and gravel into surrounding villages
14:51and prompting the National Disaster Management Agency to ask people to evacuate outside the impact radius.
14:59The National Disaster Management Agency raised the alert level to four, that is the highest,
15:04and expanded the recommendation evacuation zones.
15:07As the volcano continued to erupt, a mushroom-shaped ash cloud could be seen more than 145 kilometers away.
15:17Several villages outside the predicted radius, such as Boru, Hewa, and Watabuku, reported ash, rocks, and other debris falling as well.
15:26And as of noon Wednesday, heavy and continuous rains have affected some 300,000 residents of the Wahyu District,
15:41administered by the city of Saoqing in southern China.
15:45According to local authorities, the phenomenon has caused some 70,000 people to be relocated to safer areas.
15:52The downpours caused by Typhoon Wutip, the first of the year, along with extensive high-level low-pressure phenomena
15:59and monsoon rains have battered the region since Saturday.
16:0419 villages across the district have been affected, with widespread damage to dikes, roads, and farmland.
16:10A total of 15 people have been injured, although none of them are in life-threatening condition.

16:36Welcome back to From the South.
16:48Former U.S. Democratic Senator Bob Menendez began his 11-year sentence at the Schuylkill Federal Correctional Institution in Pennsylvania.
16:58Menendez, who in 2023 was one of the most powerful politicians in the United States
17:05as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,
17:09was convicted in a two-month trial on 16 counts, including bribery, extortion, and conspiracy.
17:16Federal prosecutors in New York revealed in 2023 that Menendez has sold his political influence
17:22in exchange for cash and gold bars.
17:25Before his sentencing in January, Menendez pleaded for leniency from Judge Sidney Stane,
17:31arguing that he had already lost his career and reputation, being ridiculed as Gold Bar Bob.
17:45Also in the United States, Bidja was held on the steps of the Minnesota Capitol in St. Paul
17:51in homage of Melissa Hortman, former Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives,
17:57and Mark Hortman, her husband.
17:59Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and his wife, Gwen Walz, attended the vigil
18:04and joined followers holding candles and laying flowers at a makeshift memorial.
18:10Alumni of the University of Minnesota organized a memorial event at noon on the Minneapolis campus
18:16with the purpose of providing a place where the shared grief could be recognized.
18:22On Saturday night, both the congresswoman and her husband were murdered in their home
18:27by an individual who impersonated a police officer in the city of Brooklyn Center in Minneapolis.
18:34And in other news, the SpaceX Starship 36 suffered a major explosion during a flight test
18:50in the U.S. state of Texas.
18:53The 123-meter rocket lifted off from Texas just before dawn
18:58but lost connection with the command center minutes into the test flight.
19:02The spacecraft reached an altitude of nearly 150 kilometers before experiencing these issues.
19:10With the support of large metallic arms, the first stage of the rocket was recovered on the pad.
19:17However, the upper engines were disabled as the rocket-headed east,
19:21where a regulated incursion into the Indian Ocean was anticipated.
19:26The location of the wreckage is currently unknown,
19:29though images from Florida show falling debris and flames near Cape Canaveral.
19:40We go now to Guatemala as riot police from the National Civil Police violently repressed a protest
19:47against mining licenses in the Santa Cruz mountain range with tear gas,
19:51leaving one person seriously injured.
19:54The victim, who is in serious condition, is the son of community journalist Raimundo Amador.
19:59The incident occurred in front of the Río Dulce deputy mayor's office,
20:05where neighbors had gathered to express their opposition to authorized mining projects.
20:11Human rights organizations have demanded an immediate investigation,
20:15as well as guarantees,
20:16for the exercise of social protest and freedom of the press.
20:29In other news, the Council of State in Colombia suspended the decree,
20:34calling for a national popular consultation on labor and social rights.
20:39The decision was made as part of processing annuity action filed against the presidential decree.
20:46Through this decree, 12 questions reflecting the spirit of labor and health reforms were to be brought to the polls.
20:53While the decision does not definitively prohibit the consultation,
20:57it does paralyze any institutional progress derived from the suspended decree for the time being.
21:03President Gustavo Petro said the Senate's boards of directors could use the provisional suspension of the decree
21:09to stop the conciliation process of the labor reform, which establishes new rights.
21:20In this context, the Colombian Senate approved the labor reform despite opposition from right-wing sectors.
21:27Now it remains to be seen what will happen with the popular consultation promoted by the executive.
21:32Our colleague Hernán Tobar with the details.
21:39With a vote of 57 parliamentarians in favor and 31 against,
21:43the Colombian Senate Plenary approved the articles that made up the labor reform,
21:47whose discussion in its fourth and final debate made clear the oppositions of the opposition benches
21:53belonging to the right-wing parties that decided not to report it.
21:57For workers, progress was made in labor rights
22:00that had been lost after the implementation of regressive measures imposed during the government of Álvaro Uribe Vélez.
22:07There is the issue of Sundays and public holidays, which were reduced by 75% in pay for work on those days,
22:18but not returned to 100% as it was before 2002,
22:22and the working nature of apprenticeship contract, a very important issue for working youth,
22:27so much that we talked about them and the opportunities they have for a better future,
22:31and yet we denied them their minimum rights.
22:33But on this occasion, they will be guaranteed their full rights as a work contract like any other,
22:38which does have a fixed term for their position.
22:40It was also agreed that the recognition and payment of overtime for night work will be changed from 10 p.m. to 7 p.m.,
22:49which is one of the most significant elements and key achievements of these projects.
22:54In a session marked by limited debate and participation by members of the government coalition benches,
23:01who support the structural changes to the articles
23:03and whose position was decisive in the elimination of some articles unfavorable to the working class.
23:15In the fourth Senate committee, Angelica Lozano and the speakers introduced some extremely regressive measures,
23:22such as hourly work, articles 37 and 38, which we managed to eliminate,
23:28as well as a four-day work week for three days of rest,
23:30which meant that workers were not paid for overtime,
23:35and we managed to eliminate all of that.
23:37We went to a clean vote because the agreements that were being made,
23:41the consultations that were being made, were broken.
23:46Although this represents progress in terms of justice and dignity in the workplace,
23:51some legislators allied with the executive branch are disappointed
23:54that they were unable to include formal provisions in the contracts of cargo transport drivers,
23:59who are waiting for the text to be reconciled in both the Chamber and the Senate,
24:04so that their demands can be met.
24:05In addition, the contracts for agricultural workers was not recognized.
24:10The Agricultural Employment Control recognized in the Substantive Labor Code in 2000 has not been restored.
24:24The reform promoted by Mr. Álvaro Uribe Vélez dismantled many rights,
24:27including the Agricultural Employment Control.
24:29Today, in Colombia, there are thousands of workers on the farms of large agricultural companies
24:36who work as they laborers.
24:38Now, the approved texts from both the Chamber and the Senate
24:41must be reconciled for presidential signature and to become law.
24:45Analysts assured that, thanks to the imperus of the popular consultation
24:49containing the key points of the labor reform,
24:53progress was made in this area by the Senate.
24:55Hernán Darío Tobar, Gaitán, Telesur, Bogotá, Colombia.
