01:49White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan says there is hope the deal will

02:00The presidential race has officially begun in Poland with the first round taking place

02:04on May 18th.

02:05Eleven candidates have announced their run for the office.

02:08The Polish governing coalition relies heavily on the results of this election.

02:12The current president, Andrzej Duda, comes from the right-wing opposition Law and Justice

02:16Party and has the power to veto pieces of legislation proposed in parliament.

02:21The main issues of the campaign so far include abortion rights, civil partnerships, the rule

02:26of law and security.

02:28The last of which is especially relevant in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

02:33According to the latest polls, Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski is the current favorite

02:37to win.

02:38His greatest competitor is Karol Nowroczki, a candidate running in name as an independent

02:43but who's endorsed by the Law and Justice Party and who currently heads the Polish Institute

02:48of National Remembrance.

02:50Running in third place is Sławomir Mensan from the right-wing Konfederacja party, but

02:55the race is expected to be a close competition between the two favorites.

03:00Trzaskowski's party, the Civic Coalition, is described as a centrist pro-European, whereas

03:04Nowroczki's Law and Justice Party is described as more skeptical of the European Union.

03:10In the last presidential elections, which took place in 2020, Trzaskowski narrowly lost

03:14to incumbent Andrzej Duda, who is no longer eligible to run due to term limits.

03:20That year, over 10 million Poles voted for each of the two candidates.

03:24Only Lech Wałęsa, the first president of Poland to be elected after the fall of communism,

03:29received a higher number of votes.

03:31If a majority of Poles do not vote for any of the candidates in the first round, a second

03:36round between the top two candidates will take place on the 1st of June.

03:45NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced the alliance is launching a new mission to

03:49protect undersea cables in the Baltic Sea region.

03:54His announcement comes following a strain of incidents in the Baltic that have heightened

03:58concerns about possible Russian activity in the region, including the suspected sabotage

04:03of undersea cables.

04:08This military activity is part of our ongoing effort to enhance maritime presence and monitoring

04:14of key areas for our alliance.

04:17It will involve a range of assets, including frigates and maritime patrol aircraft, among

04:23others, and will enhance our vigilance in the Baltic.

04:28Russia said NATO adversaries must know the alliance will not accept attacks on its critical

04:33infrastructure, with Estonia's prime minister adding that plans were in place for the Baltics

04:38to be cut free from the Russian energy sector.

04:46South Korea's impeached president, Yoon Suk-kyo, was detained by hundreds of police and anti-corruption

04:52officials for questioning over his imposition of martial law last month.

04:56They are now investigating whether his short-lived decision amounted to attempted rebellion.

05:02He insists the anti-corruption agency doesn't have the authority to investigate his actions

05:07but that he complied to prevent violence.

05:10He said his declaration of martial law was justified as a legitimate act of governance

05:21Classes are still cancelled at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands following

05:25a cyber attack over the weekend.

05:28The attack was reported at 9 p.m. on Saturday by the university's IT department.

05:33They say they noticed unusually heavy and suspicious traffic on the university's digital

05:37platform and have since made the decision to take the servers offline.

05:42The shutdown of the university's network has caused major disruptions to faculty members

05:46who lost access to platforms needed for their jobs.

05:55The network breach came at a time when students were preparing for exams and assessments.

06:06The university has been the target of cyber attacks in the past.

06:10Scientists say more needs to be done to enhance network security.

06:14This is also like not the first time that the university gets hacked and I think it's

06:18just like a major problem and for example the way the university gets hacked is more

06:23advanced every time.

06:24I think now with the development of AI like phishing is more advanced and other techniques

06:30that hackers may employ.

06:31Maybe like the university needs funds to secure its systems of course because like research

06:35here is really important.

06:38The university's administration has announced that all exams and assessments scheduled for

06:42the 20th of January will be postponed by one week.

06:46They also added that its IT department is making progress in countering the breach and

06:51expects students to regain access by Monday.

06:58As the threat of a TikTok ban looms, some U.S. TikTok users are flocking to Chinese

07:03social media app Xiaohongsu, making it the top downloaded app in the U.S.

07:10Users landed on the app called Little Red Book in English as an alternative to TikTok,

07:16with some saying they specifically picked the Chinese app to protest the TikTok ban.

07:23Today it has grown into a popular platform for young people to share practical tips or

07:28tutorials on various topics like beauty, fashion, fitness, adventure or even career

07:35advice.

07:36The app has over 300 million monthly active users and most of them are young females living

07:43in the big cities.

07:45The U.S. Supreme Court is due to rule on whether TikTok must divest from its Chinese parent

07:50company or be banned in the U.S. over security concerns.

07:54Masses of TikTok users joined the Chinese app using hashtags such as TikTok refugee.

08:01Since yesterday we have seen many new posts in English calling themselves the TikTok refugees

08:06and the reaction from the Chinese users have been mixed.

08:10Some believe this is a great way the Chinese culture get to a global audience while some

08:15worries this will be a cultural invasion and it might have an impact on the censorship.

08:23Little Red Book has become the top downloaded free app on the U.S. App Store, but it is

08:27not clear if the app will serve as a sustainable replacement for TikTok.

08:43The European Union and the United Kingdom are the most skeptical about Donald Trump's

08:48return to the White House as U.S. President, according to a study conducted by the European

08:54Council on Foreign Relations over 24 countries.

08:58The historical European allies' scepticism contrasts with the more positive opinion emerging

09:04elsewhere in the world, but historian Timothy Garton explains why Europe is wary.
