00:35Breton, an incumbent appointed to the executive portfolio in 2019 and expected to secure the

00:42top job again, made the announcement on social media platform X on Monday.

00:47The Frenchman claimed that von der Leyen pressured Paris to submit another candidate for the

00:52upcoming new College of Commissioners due to, quote, personal reasons.

00:57He wrote on X that he became aware of the alleged lobbying, quote, a few days ago.

01:02I have concluded that I can no longer exercise my duties in the College, he said.

01:08The European Commission did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

01:13Breton's resignation forces France to submit a new candidate for European Commissioner.

01:18It also deprives the Renew Europe political group of one of its most prominent representatives.

01:25The new College of EU Commissioners was expected to be finalised by the 1st of November.

01:35The FBI says Donald Trump was the target of an apparent assassination attempt on his Florida

01:40golf course.

01:41The incident happened at around 2pm local time when secret service agents saw a rifle

01:46muzzle in the shrubbery that lines the green.

01:49An agent fired and the gunman dropped the rifle and fled in an SUV.

01:54At a press conference, a picture was shown of what law enforcement found at the scene,

01:58an AK-47, backpacks and a GoPro camera.

02:03The man was later stopped and arrested by police officers in neighbouring Martin County.

02:08We certainly have the vehicle involved in the incident at Mar-a-Lago and we have the

02:13suspect that they were looking for.

02:15And now the FBI and the secret service will take over that investigation.

02:20Sunday's assassination attempt is the latest incident in an election campaign year marked

02:25by unprecedented violence.

02:27On the 13th of July, Trump was shot during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania and a bullet

02:32grazed his ear.

02:35In a statement on ex-incumbent President Joe Biden wrote, I'm relieved that the former

02:40president is unharmed.

02:42Biden withdrew from November's presidential race in July, giving way to Vice President

02:47Kamala Harris to become the party's nominee.

02:50On X, she said she was glad Trump was safe, adding, Violence has no place in America.

02:57The FBI said an investigation into the shooting is ongoing and urged people to stay away from

03:02the area.

03:03The Trump campaign hasn't said whether the former president's upcoming campaign events

03:08will be affected by Sunday's events.

03:16Moroccan police have stopped hundreds of migrants from crossing into the Spanish enclave of

03:21Ceuta.

03:22That comes after dozens had managed earlier on Sunday to cross the first border fence

03:27between Morocco and the EU territory.

03:30Sunday has been a day of high tension after hundreds of people gathered at the border

03:34following reported calls on social media for a collective breach attempt.

03:39The Spanish news agency EFE said that the young migrants were mostly Moroccan nationals

03:44but that some came from elsewhere in Africa.

03:47The twin Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla are the only land borders between Africa and

03:52the European Union.

03:54Both have experienced occasional mass waves of migrants trying to cross the border to

03:59reach the EU.

04:01Morocco and Spain have worked to strengthen cooperation on addressing illegal migration.

04:06The Moroccan Interior Ministry said that in August, authorities blocked more than 11,300

04:12attempts to cross into Ceuta and 3,300 to Melilla.

04:17But the most popular route from Morocco for irregular migrants hoping to reach Spain is

04:21by sea.

04:23More than 22,000 arrivals were registered by August in the nearby Canary Islands, a

04:29126% increase on last year's numbers.

04:36German border police are carrying out spot passport checks on all of its land borders

04:41from Monday morning.

04:42Queues at borders, particularly in the north and west of Germany, are expected, with transport

04:47companies and border commuters preparing for waiting times.

04:52Migration expert Svenja Niederfranke explains why this is happening.

04:56In the current political climate, the German government wants to show that they are doing

05:00something.

05:01And with the upcoming elections and the past elections, this is very important political

05:05signaling, of course.

05:07And it signals we take back control of our borders.

05:11Research has shown usually with these border checks, it's usually not the big fish, it's

05:19the smaller fish that will get caught.

05:21And not every single smuggler will get caught either because obviously they know where the

05:25border checks are and they will find different ways to do it.

05:29The German government is hoping that these checks will lead to those who have been banned

05:33from entering Germany being turned away at the borders.

05:36And what about the public's perception of these extended controls?

05:39We asked people in Berlin.

05:55No, I don't think it will change anything because there will still be a lot of workers

06:19lacking in a lot of industries.

06:22The sentiments are probably like the rejection of immigrants is probably deeper rooted, if

06:31I may say, in the socio-economic context and other things.

06:36I don't think it will bring anything.

06:42With police and authorities carrying out these checks from Monday morning, experts and a

06:47police union are warning they need thousands more personnel to carry out these controls.

06:52However, with the federal budget already so stretched, it seems unlikely that these

06:57positions will be created.

07:08Around 84% of the world population is religious and the number is expected to grow.

07:15In some countries, religious beliefs and voting intentions are closely related.

07:22Many people want political leaders who share their same faith and practices.

07:27That's particularly true for some Asian and African states.

07:31A new Pew Research Center survey found.

07:35But also for some European nations, particularly in Eastern Europe.

07:40In Poland, for example, 52% want their leader to practice their same religion.

07:49In Greece, it's 42%.

07:51In Hungary, 40%.

07:54People who identify with the right end of the political spectrum are more likely to

07:59say things such as that it's important for my leader to have religious beliefs that are

08:05the same as mine or have strong religious beliefs, even if they differ from my own.

08:12And so while it isn't necessarily true in every single country, that is a broad sort

08:16of pattern that we do see.

08:21Western and Northern Europe stand at the opposite side of the spectrum.

08:26In the Netherlands, only 15% of people care about that.

08:31Likewise, in Germany, the UK, France and Spain, less than a quarter of respondents believe

08:38religion is relevant to their political choices.

08:42Italy is the only exception among Europe's biggest economies, with 30% of people wanting

08:48their leader to follow the same religion.

08:53Multiculturalism was on show at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

10:00The soon-to-be-renovated Pompidou Center in Paris is showing a vast retrospective of Surrealist

10:12works to celebrate the 100th birthday of the movement.

10:18About 500 artworks from Picasso to Dali are on show in the exhibition that was first displayed

10:24in Brussels last spring.

10:29Surrealism is in fact the reaction of young people who have been sent to the war when

10:35they were 20 years old at least.

10:38And finally they came back and wanted to destroy the world who was this world, who had driven

10:45the civilization and the humankind to a destruction.

10:48So they wanted to build something completely new.

10:55The retrospective aims to show the scope of the movement officially dissolved in 1969

11:01with an emphasis on long overlooked female artists.

11:25This expanded exhibition will run until January 13th 2025 in Paris.

11:33It will then tour Spain, Germany and the United States.
