Police officer and man shot in altercation in city’s south

A Queensland police officer and a man have been shot during an altercation in Brisbane. Both men have been taken to hospital one has life-threatening injuries.

00:00Well, police say on face value this was supposed to be a routine job that quickly escalated

00:08into a life-threatening situation.

00:11Two officers were called to a property in the Brisbane suburb of Annerley just before

00:159.30 this morning after the homeowners reported a man trespassing in their backyard.

00:22Police say the two officers approached a 26-year-old male who was armed with a piece of timber

00:28and that's when the situation escalated.

00:31During a struggle, the man lunged for a firearm belonging to the senior officer.

00:36The firearm discharged and that senior constable received a gunshot wound to the left leg.

00:42During this time, the junior officer, in his first year of policing, was forced to discharge

00:47his firearm and that struck the male twice in the stomach.

00:52Police say the junior officer then applied first aid to the injured officer.

00:56The 26-year-old man was tasered by other officers who attended the scene shortly after

01:02before he was then taken to hospital where he is now undergoing surgery.

01:07The injured officer is in a stable condition in hospital.

01:11Police have said the homeowner and the man are not known to each other but the circumstances

01:16of how he ended up in their backyard will form part of the investigation.

01:22I think you'd appreciate that any circumstances such as this are traumatic.

01:29There's a number of challenges that both of these officers will face, both particularly

01:34physically but also psychologically and we have a very, very robust welfare system that

01:40sits around these two officers.

01:41That has already been wrapped around those two officers and their families, their families

01:44have been advised and we'll be supporting them as well.

01:47The inner city suburb of Annerley is a quiet neighbourhood and largely has a mix of families

01:54and young professionals and retirees, so this incident has understandably shocked residents.
