Man shot dead by police in Middleton Grange in Sydney's south-west after alleged knife attack on officer

An investigation is underway after police shot a man dead in Sydney's southwest last night. Police allege he had tried to stab an officer before they opened fire. Tony Ibrahim reports.

00:00A police call out, a man shot dead.

00:06The incident took place in a matter of seconds.

00:08Locals called triple zero after seeing a knife man roaming the streets of Middleton Grange.

00:14When police arrived, officers say he tried to stab them.

00:17A male has rushed towards the vehicle and at least two occasions has struck the driver

00:23of the vehicle through an open window with that knife.

00:26After a taser failed to subdue the man, a senior constable opened fire.

00:31The shots heard by neighbours.

00:33I was in my room playing with my brother so then randomly I heard gunshots.

00:39Although officers performed CPR, the man died at the scene.

00:42When we deal with something that's a direct threat to public safety or a threat to police

00:47officers we stop the threat.

00:50Now an investigation is underway into exactly what happened.

00:54It's typical practice to declare a critical incident investigation whenever a member

00:58of the public is seriously injured or killed during a police operation.

01:02State Crime Command's Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding

01:06last night's incident and their investigation will be subject to an independent review.

01:12None of the officers were injured in last night's incident and enquiries are underway

01:17with the man's family as the search for answers continues.
