The crystal ball meteorologist Joe Lumber. Joe, let's get right into it.
00:03
We have a very busy weather pattern next week. What do we need to be ready for?
00:07
One of the things that you like to say, Bernie, the pattern is loaded. It's loaded for bear
00:12
because there's a lot going on right now. And the events that are unfolding today
00:16
and this weekend and early next week really set the table for what's to come for all of next week.
00:20
Waves of cold from the plains to the east. That's just a lock. And we've been talking
00:24
about this for the past couple of weeks. There will be travel disruptions behind the storm system
00:29
Sunday into Monday that may linger for an extra day or two. So be prepared for that.
00:33
And there's still a threat for snow and ice in parts of the southeast, particularly
00:36
late next week. There may be a sneaky little system on Wednesday,
00:39
but I think Friday and Saturday is a bigger concern over a bigger area.
00:43
You know, Joe, you and the long range department talked about this. You know,
00:47
we're not looking at record cold. It's just the prolonged nature of it,
00:51
especially from the Dakotas in the parts of the Midwest.
00:55
Yeah, the source regions are not terribly cold right now. You're just manufacturing it with it.
01:00
And you're starting to lay snow down and more and more places in here.
01:03
So as these air masses keep coming down, it just gets progressively cold. And it's the coldest
01:08
air that we've seen so far this season. And there will be prolonged high heating demand across the
01:13
entire eastern half of the country. That includes areas down into Texas and also into the southeast,
01:18
even into northern Florida. There will be multiple days of subzero in these places
01:22
with this pattern unfolding over the next 10 days.
01:26
You know, you talk about waves of cold, Joe. This map that you and I showed last Friday hasn't
01:30
changed. Here it comes. Storm leaving the mid-Atlantic on Wednesday, cold on Monday.
01:36
Here comes the first shot of cold.
01:38
Yeah, it's already cold. It's going to get colder. And you can see that by the time we
01:42
get to Wednesday, behind the first storm system, everybody from the northeast all the way back to
01:47
the Midwest is going to be really, really feeling this. Sub freezing temperature will get down
01:52
into Texas and even a depart to the southeast. And there's snow and ice threats, you know,
01:57
that next system coming out of the western Gulf of Mexico. In fact,
02:00
there you can see the seeds of it. The jet stream gets suppressed to the south.
02:04
The question is going to be, will the storm system try to work its way northeastward?
02:08
And there's some reasons why that could happen. Or will it get suppressed out to the south?
02:12
And there's little to no snow with it. Regardless, brutally cold is a factor in both of these,
02:17
because that moves out and more cold air comes in behind it.
02:20
And Joe, I know you and the Long Range Department are worried that the storm threats keep coming.
02:24
We're always looking at trouble, Bernie, down the road. It looks like another system sometime
02:28
between the 13th and the 15th. Similar track, maybe a bit farther north. With all the cold
02:33
air in place, you've got to worry about snow and ice threats from maybe Boston and New York City
02:37
all the way to Little Rock and some rain and thunderstorms in the southeast.
