Looking ahead: Cold air with snow for Northeast

AccuWeather Long-Range Expert Joe Lundberg looks ahead to next week. Cold air accompanied by snow and flurries could be in store for the Northeast. He also looks at early weather trends for March.

00:00Let's take a look at what we were talking about last week at this time.

00:04We go back to last Thursday, more than a week ago.

00:08That's the disturbance that we're going to be tracking.

00:12This is, say, Wednesday. As that feature moves on through, you do expect to see some

00:16wintry weather in some of these places, maybe all the way down to the I-20 corridor.

00:20The question is going to be, where is that storm going to go? Does it move quickly out

00:24to sea to the east and we leave the northeast alone? Or

00:28is there a piece of energy in here that helps to pull this up to the northeast and spread some of that

00:32snow and ice farther north to places like Erie, Buffalo, Burlington,

00:36and Boston? That remains to be seen, but that's on the table for later next week.

00:40And of course, Joe, that storm took more

00:44of a southern route, although the upper low behind it did spread more lake snow

00:48and even a little bit of snow in New York City and Philadelphia yesterday.

00:52Okay, different pattern next week. It really is a different pattern,

00:56and the big thing is the cold air of this week is largely gone

01:00so that we get a nice little reprieve. The jet stream still takes a dip here in the middle part of the

01:04country during the mid part of the week, and a couple of disturbances coming through here will produce

01:08some light snow and flurries. Nothing of great consequence, but you'll see the cold air

01:12gone from the south. It will turn cold next weekend, and most of the west will be dry

01:16next week. All right, Joe, take a look at this. Here we go.

01:20Shot of Arctic air coming behind these storms next weekend. Yeah, there's a storm

01:24that will come up through the northeast and mid-Atlantic Wednesday night, Thursday, Thursday night, and then on

01:28Friday it moves away, but then it allows a series of clipper features to come on through.

01:32And I don't think it's one. It's probably two or three, and as a result of that, you're going to see

01:36Arctic air pulled back into the pattern. As each one of those clippers goes by,

01:40you're going to see some snow and flurries, some lake effect snow, and certainly

01:44a true taste of January behind those features next weekend. You know, Joe, let's

01:48take a look at the current snow cover as we get you ready for early March.

01:52Yeah, I mean, just look how expansive this is across the country. Just take a look at it.

01:56All the way down into northern Arkansas, Tennessee, and Virginia. Kind of zoom in across

02:00the Great Lakes and the northeast, and you can see just how expansive this is across

02:04much of northern New England, upstate New York, and back into the Great Lakes. That's a lot

02:08of snow on the ground. As we go into the month of March, that could play

02:12a role in how the weather evolves. Now, we do think the trends, you know, another

02:16blast of cold air for that first week.

02:20Probably some snow on the north side of it, but as we head toward the middle of the month,

02:24definitely see some warming trends. With all that snow on the ground, Bernie, I'd be concerned

02:28about flooding. There's already some in the Ohio River Valley now. I think there's more to come.
