00:03The Met Office has issued a yellow weather alert for snow in Derbyshire with forecasters

00:08warning of possible power cuts and travel disruption.

00:11The warning, which runs from noon on Saturday to 9am on Monday, is due to forecast heavy

00:17snow which may cause some disruption over the weekend.

00:21The Met Office said,

00:22Outbreaks of rain spreading north-eastwards later on Saturday and overnight into Sunday

00:27will likely be preceded by a spell of snow on its northern flank.

00:31Whilst there is a fair bit of uncertainty as to how far north this may spread and how

00:35long any snow will last, significant accumulations of snow are possible, especially but not exclusively

00:41on hills.

00:43They say that the snowfall may lead to power cuts and possible travel disruption in Derbyshire

00:46over the weekend.

00:56Derbyshire County Council is preparing for yet more controversial savings cutbacks after

01:00predicting an £18m budget shortfall for the 2025-26 financial year.

01:06The Conservative-led council has already been rolling out savings proposals to manage a

01:11budget deficit of £39m for the 2024-25 financial year, blaming reduced government funding,

01:18the impact of the pandemic, rising costs and the National Pay Award, as well as the growing

01:23demand for adult and children's social care services.

01:26Its current forecast overspend for the 2024-25 year stands at £28m, following a series of

01:33unpopular cuts to services.

01:35The council has now predicted a shortfall in its budget for the 2025-2026 financial

01:40year of £18.6m, which will mean new, further saving proposals.
