Customs foil attempt to smuggle 81kg of drugs worth RM2.6mil

The Royal Malaysian Customs Department foiled an attempt to smuggle 81.34kg of methamphetamine worth RM2.6mil to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on Dec 17.  At a press conference on Friday (Dec 27), Customs Central Zone Assistant Director-General Norlela Ismail revealed that the drugs were concealed in four parcels falsely declared as stationery and were intended for delivery via air freight.  Norlela added that efforts to locate a local man delivering these parcels to a logistics hub and parcel delivery centre in Shah Alam, Selangor, on Dec 13 would be intensified, as this is the largest drug bust involving parcel delivery via air freight. 02:04in a cargo terminal operator in the KLIA Free Trade Zone.

02:15and found 40 packages of Lutsina plastic

02:20containing white crystal powder

02:24in the form of a methamphetamine drug.

02:27Initial investigation on the delivery list

02:30found that the final destination of the parcel boxes

02:33was Kinabalu, Sabah.

02:37The methamphetamine was listed as a prohibited item

02:41in Article 1, Section 3 of the Criminal Code 1952.

02:48The heavy weight exceeding 81.34 kilograms,

02:54with a robbery estimate exceeding 2.6 million ringgit.

02:59The first stage of the investigation

03:02was to identify the item as a stationary item

03:07in order to cover the eyes of the authorities.

03:13This case was investigated under Section 39B-1-A

03:19of the Criminal Code 1952,

03:23which states that if a crime is committed,

03:26a death sentence will be imposed

03:28or a life sentence will be imposed

03:30and a maximum sentence of 12 weeks will be imposed

03:35if the death sentence is not imposed.

03:38Based on the number of robberies,

03:43which is 81.34 kilograms,

03:47the Customs Office estimates that

03:49more than 406,700 people can be saved

03:53from drug use.

03:56In connection with this, many people are urged

03:59to help the Customs to fight the crime of corruption,
