00:19Doc, first of all, how is the effect of continuous rain due to shear line here in Mt. Mayon?

00:26As of now, we have not experienced any lahar flow due to shear line,

00:31although it has not rained much in the area.

00:33Even now, we are still continuing to build our residences,

00:37especially those who live near the rivers that flow from the mountains of Mt. Mayon,

00:43that are still in good condition.

00:45This is more important if the rain will continue because it may cause lahar flow.

00:50Doc, can you explain to our countrymen what our countrymen can expect

00:59near the volcanoes and river channels when there is lahar flow

01:04so that our countrymen can understand better?

01:09Okay, if there is lahar flow,

01:11this is a rapid flow.

01:13This is a rapid flow of mixed water and volcanic debris

01:19from the volcano towards the rivers.

01:22This is a dangerous lahar flow

01:25since it can destroy houses, houses and crops on its path.

01:31It can also cut off life.

01:34This is the most dangerous.

01:37For example, in 2006,

01:40there were almost 1,200 casualties

01:46during the lahar in Albay.

01:49After the eruption in 1991,

01:52there were also many casualties due to lahar.

02:03The areas that we identified that may be affected by lahar flow

02:09are the areas near the Meeisi Channel, Binaan Channel,

02:15Anoling, Kirangay, Maninila, Masarawag,

02:18Mulad Bukad, Nasisi, Mabinit, Matanak, Bulawan, and Basud Channels.

02:24These are the areas on the southern, western, and eastern sides of Mt. Mayon Volcano.

02:29Doc, what are the immediate response and action

02:33that our countrymen should take

02:35if they notice lahar flow from the volcano?

02:40They should immediately evacuate to safe areas

02:44designated by the local government.

02:47They should not cross or approach the rivers

02:50that may cause lahar flow.

02:52Most importantly, they should consult local authorities

02:56for immediate assistance and information.

03:01Do you see the possibility of the eruption of Mt. Mayon Volcano?

03:07And what is the alert level for now?

03:12Mt. Mayon Volcano is very much active

03:14so there is always this possibility that it will erupt again.

03:19But for now, the Mt. Mayon Volcano is only at alert level 1

03:24meaning there is a low level of unrest.

03:28In other words, Dr. Bacolkol,

03:30how is the activity of Mt. Mayon Volcano

03:33after it erupts with dark ashes?

03:38Right now, Mt. Mayon Volcano is still at alert level 3

03:42meaning there is a possibility of an eruption next week.

03:48For the last 24 hours,

03:55we have witnessed 20 volcanic earthquakes

03:58and we were able to measure sulfur dioxide emission yesterday

04:01which reached 6,014 tons per day.

04:05These are all indications that the activity of the volcano is still ongoing

04:10and as I mentioned, we are still at alert level 3.

04:16and earthquakes in Ilocos Sur.

04:22The number of quakes has decreased.

04:27The highest number was recorded between December 19 to 20

05:09Based on our modeling,

05:11Manila Trench is capable of generating magnitude 8.4 earthquake.

05:15If it does happen,

05:17it could also generate tsunami waves as high as 10 meters in some areas.

05:21That is why it's very important to be prepared.

05:26to know the natural signs of an impending local tsunami.

05:30This is the shake, drop, and roar.

05:33If there's a strong shaking, you can hardly stand.
