People on the street: Closing bars and restaurants

With so many bars and restaurants closing across Greater Manchester, we went out into the city to ask people’s verdicts on what has gone wrong and how it can be fixed.

00:00Hi I'm Theo and this is People on the Street. Today I'm out in Manchester asking people

00:03about bars and restaurants. And that's because since Covid and last year's cost of living

00:07crisis bars and restaurants have had a very tough time of it. Many are closing because

00:11they simply can't keep up with financial demands. We want to know whether people have been affected

00:16personally by it, whether one of their favourite places may have been forced to close and what

00:20they think can be done about it.

00:21What I think is that this absolutely is not the fault of Labour's budget. I don't know

00:26if Labour's budget is going to help or what, but what I do know is that this has been going

00:30on for a long time before that and to try and blame it on them is stupid. Because so

00:35much stuff closed since Covid and it's not been back on the up and up.

00:40I think there's a different atmosphere when you're shopping in store or eating out and

00:44a different environment. But I think it would be sad. I think just going out with friends

00:49for a simple lunch would be different, won't it? Where are you going to go? And what's

00:53going to be, is the price going to be hiked up because everywhere else is closed?

00:56Yeah, it's always going to be worrying. Anything that's changed is a worry, I find.
