We went out into Manchester to ask people on the street what could be done about the housing crisis, and whether there was room to build in their area.

00:00Hi I'm Theo and this is People on the Street. Today I'm out in Manchester asking people

00:03about housing. We essentially want to know whether people think there is scope to build

00:06more homes in the places where they live. Labour have set very ambitious housing targets

00:10over the next 5-10 years and we want to know whether people think that those houses could

00:15be popping up near them.

00:16You know we are in a housing crisis. There is currently a waiting list of 1.5 million

00:21people on the social housing waiting list. It's absolutely ginormous.

00:26It feels like there's houses going up everywhere.

00:29Yeah, yeah, there is. There's a lot of building going on.

00:32The housing is needed but it needs to be done in a specific way. It shouldn't just demolish

00:39what's already there. It should build upon what is there. For example you don't need

00:42as much work space because people like to work from home. You could use those empty

00:46buildings and basically kick the backside of those people who have empty properties.

00:51If someone's not using land it should be taxed as heavily as possible to ensure that they

00:55are using it. And then the people that are using the land that's then given back to the

00:58community, they should actually be rewarded on it.
