Phone-less bars in Manchester

With a few venues now picking up on the trend of banning phones or covering cameras, we’ve looked into some of the places giving it a try.

00:00Let's talk a little bit about a new trend that's taking over the club scene across Europe

00:03and has just reared its head for the first time here in Manchester.

00:06I'm of course talking about phoneless clubs,

00:09something that was popularised by the infamous Berghain club in Berlin,

00:12a club that can leave you queuing for hours

00:14and turned away purely on the whimsy of the bouncer.

00:16They don't allow phones at all there,

00:17whereas Amber's nightclub in Manchester, which opened last week,

00:20covers your smartphone camera with a sticker,

00:22meaning that fewer club goers will be glued to their phone

00:24and unable to properly enjoy the atmosphere.

00:26It seems like a genuinely good concept

00:28and it isn't only being picked up by clubs.

00:30We've got a piece on our website about a restaurant that's following the same example.

00:33The restaurant is called Lewis and it opened its doors in September.

00:36The restaurant is dressed as a love letter to 1950s New York,

00:40with piano players and singers featuring among a classically designed space,

00:43which we can't show you because, as we've stated, no photos allowed.

00:47Again, bouncers at Lewis will provide you with a sticker to cover your phone camera

00:50and you'll be told not to remove it.
