I'm Conway Gittins reporting from New York City. Here's what we're watching on the street today.
00:04
Wall Street is kicking off the new month in mixed fashion after November logged the best month of the entire year.
00:10
The Dow led the pack with a 7.5 percent November rally.
00:14
The stock market isn't the only thing enjoying new records. So is the box office.
00:19
This Thanksgiving weekend was the biggest ever for Hollywood in terms of domestic ticket sales.
00:24
Movie theaters snatched up $420 million between Wednesday and Sunday, according to early numbers.
00:31
That easily surpassed 2018, the last record Thanksgiving weekend, by more than $100 million, according to Comscore.
00:40
Disney brought the heat and the magic with Moana 2, taking in $221 million all by itself,
00:46
making it the best Thanksgiving debut Hollywood has ever seen.
00:50
Throw in global theaters and the sequel raked in an overly impressive $386 million.
00:56
In a statement, Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman said,
00:59
the movie's performance at the box office has far exceeded Disney's high expectations and,
01:05
quote, this is a moment to celebrate and we're thankful to all the moviegoers and fans who've helped make this a record-breaking debut.
01:14
Moana 2's debut also set other box office records, including the biggest Disney animation opening of all time
01:21
and the biggest five-day stretch ever.
01:24
Thanks to Moana 2, Wicked, which has grabbed $262 million since its debut,
01:30
and Gladiator 2, which has taken $111 million since its opening,
01:35
the box office is now down just 6 percent from the same time last year, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.
01:43
And that'll do it for your daily briefing.
01:45
From New York City, I'm Conway Gittens with The Street.
