I'm Conway Gittins reporting from the New York Stock Exchange.
00:02
Here's what we're watching on the street today.
00:05
The Dow kicks off a new week in record territory as investors cheer Donald Trump's pick for
00:10
Treasury Secretary.
00:11
Scott Bessette is a hedge fund veteran.
00:14
Investors believe he will be a competent voice within the incoming administration when it
00:18
comes to tariffs, the ballooning federal deficit, and economic growth.
00:23
In other business headlines, the Hollywood box office is getting a much-needed dose of
00:27
razzle dazzle.
00:29
The combination of Wicked and Gladiator 2, dubbed Glickid, took in roughly $384 million
00:35
at the weekend box office worldwide.
00:38
While that's not as good as 2023's box office blitz of Barbenheimer, it's still lifting
00:45
hopes all across Hollywood.
00:47
The box office is down roughly 11 percent in 2024 compared to the same time last year,
00:52
and down 27 percent compared to 2019.
00:56
The source of that hope is in the numbers.
00:59
Wicked had the biggest debut of any Broadway adaptation in history and the third biggest
01:05
opening weekend of 2024.
01:07
It took in $114 million in opening domestic weekend ticket sales.
01:12
Add in the global box office, and the number goes up to more than $164 million.
01:17
Gladiator 2 took in $56 million in North America, and thanks to a November head start outside
01:23
the U.S., its box office haul so far tops $220 million.
01:28
Hollywood hopes it can keep riding this wave through the holiday season with family favorite
01:32
and proven box office draw, Moana 2.
01:36
That'll do it for your daily briefing from the New York Stock Exchange.
01:38
I'm Conway Gittins with The Street.
