People on the street: Train fares

With train tickets set to become more expensive over the next few months, we went out onto the streets of Manchester to get people’s verdicts on the quality of England’s trains.

00:00Hi I'm Theo with Manchester World and today I'm out on the streets of Manchester asking

00:03people about trains. That's because it looks as though the average commuter is now going

00:07to have to pay around 5% extra on top of his already substantial travel costs. We want

00:12to know whether people think that's right, whether they're happy to pay the extra, or

00:16whether they view it as a bit cheeky. No, not at all. Like it's so bad. Never, ever

00:21on time. Yeah, they're always like packed, like there's nowhere to sit, nowhere to stand

00:26even. On the days that you're meant to get a train, you know. But it's the same for everyone,

00:32so you're going to get a crowd, but they could throw us a bone if a little bit. So people

00:36out here are not surviving and are in poverty, it makes it harder for them as well at the

00:41same time, and them increasing the prices has a major effect on our people and our society

00:47in general. I think it's bad that it's going up, but I want to see that it's going in the

00:52right place if I'm paying more, that if I miss the train and I get one 20 seconds after

00:57it that I'm not going to be fined, because I'm basically on the same train.
