Tim The Yowie Man recounts a close encounter at Ginninderra Falls

Within just 9 minutes, Charlie Hyles and his fellow campers found themselves near peril when Ginninderra Falls began to overflow.

00:00It's storm season which means there's always a chance that water levels in

00:04drains, creeks and rivers can suddenly rise even if it's not raining where you

00:10are. Charlie Hiles, whose family owns Ginninderra Falls, experienced this

00:15firsthand when he was recently camping at the little-known Lower Falls near

00:20where Ginninderra Creek flows into the Murrumbidgee River. At no stage was the

00:25safety of anyone compromised but it was a fascinating phenomena to see the

00:28waters rise so quickly.

00:33Yeah so a couple of years ago we came for a rafting trip we slept overnight

00:39on the beach down there and walked up for a bit of a morning swim. When we got

00:44here the water, not much more than this, was coming down the Lower Falls and we were like

00:49oh this is brilliant. Went for a bit of a swim, we're up under the waterfall and

00:53suddenly it started getting a bit difficult to get close. Getting a bit more

00:57confused we're like this is actually really hard. Then we were looking and it's

01:01starting a bit of rocks and stick coming down. Came out and took another photo and

01:07it was a complete flood over the top of the fall of water coming down and pushed

01:11everyone all the way out out of the main pool. Yeah the night before we'd had a

01:16big rainstorm and then it cleared we got out of our tents walked up here for a

01:20swim and by the time we got back down to our rafts that were pulled up there

01:25they'd washed out into the river so we had to do a bit of a swim to get our

01:28rafts back. It was a bit of palaver.
