All right, Mike, of course, he's with the Sporting News, the famed columnist, you see
00:07
him on Fox Sports and Big Ten Network during the college basketball season because he's
00:12
on take for the Indiana Hoosiers, as you know, and that's important.
00:18
He wrote an article about Otani being the player of the year for the Sporting News.
00:24
And you know, he I guess he blew out judge for the vote.
00:29
I saw the article, he killed him right in the voting.
00:33
And then I just want to get your reaction to how bad he had 60 percent more votes than
00:39
judge.
00:40
And then I'd like to know your opinion of how awful both of them have been in the world.
00:47
That's what Freddie Freeman is for, I guess, you know, in Otani's case, he has been a little
00:54
bit dinged up there.
00:56
And that's made an impact on his performance.
00:58
But Freeman hasn't has made it so that it has not mattered at all for the Dodgers.
01:05
In the case of judge, it's a disappointment without a doubt.
01:08
And it is tough for power hitters.
01:10
Those things sometimes come and go and sometimes the pitcher gets the better of you.
01:16
I remember when I was covering the NLCS in 91 and 92 and Barry Bonds just really couldn't
01:23
be you know, he couldn't get himself to be Barry Bonds.
01:26
And the Pirates went home twice as a result of that or partly as a result of that.
01:32
It's a tough ride sometimes.
01:34
And we're way past the days when a Willie Stargell or Roberto Clemente would dominate the
01:41
postseason because pitching has advanced so much in that time.
01:44
Not that there weren't great pitchers then, but there's more great pitchers now than there
01:50
were then.
01:51
And the second reliever and the third reliever and the fourth reliever are all those pitchers
01:57
because of Freddie Freeman.
01:59
It's a home run every time he comes to the plate.
02:01
So I don't want to hear about great pitching.
02:03
Where is it? We don't have any here.
02:05
We don't have any great pitching.
02:06
It's all in L.A., man.
02:08
I think that's the problem.
02:10
Honestly, Mike, have you ever seen anything worse than that third base coach sending the
02:16
slowest guy in Major League Baseball rounding third on a one hop liner to left with Teoscar
02:25
Hernandez running inward?
02:26
As you know, there's two things in sports that happen.
02:29
One, it's a three point shot stepping into it.
02:33
It's automatic.
02:34
If you step into a three, you have way better chance of jumping up and making it.
02:38
Anyone that steps into a three can launch and fire and hit.
02:42
Second thing, a guy in left field running in on a one hop liner with an arm.
02:48
What do you think he's going to do against a guy that runs four miles an hour around third
02:53
base? That was the worst send home I've ever seen by a major league third base coach.
02:59
I think that's a reasonable assertion.
03:01
I really do. I mean, you've been watching baseball for 50 years, and I think that that's a
03:06
reasonable assertion because I'm watching Stanton and he is moving so slowly that that it's
03:15
staggering. And one wonders while you're watching live action, is that slow motion?
03:21
Is that because nobody, no human being could move, no professional athlete could move that
03:26
slowly in this circumstance.
03:28
But he really did. And it was so obvious he was going to be out when when he turned third
03:34
base going for what you would call full steam when he turned third base.
03:40
There was no question he was going to be out.
03:42
It's just a question of by how much.
03:43
And I just don't understand how you do that in that circumstance.
03:48
I've seen bad decisions before where guys got thrown out as a result, but never one that was
03:56
so egregious because the runner had no chance.
03:59
I mean, had no chance when he reached third base.
04:02
That's what the it's an easy call to hold him up.
04:05
So do you think that or so?
04:08
So Judge has these monster season, 62, 58, 144 RBIs.
04:14
Do you feel that we we said earlier in the show that he will not be remembered for any of
04:20
that? Frankly, he's going to be remembered for being a postseason flop.
04:24
He has been since he has been in over 50 games in playoffs over his short career.
04:32
And now he's hitting.
04:34
Oh, ninety one.
04:36
Austin Wells is hitting 100.
04:39
I mean, honestly, I have never seen a superstar this bad in any sport ever in a big game, in
04:48
a big moment, in a big light, in a big spotlight like the World Series.
04:52
This guy made the World Series and he is the most anemic at bat.
04:57
He misses by two feet and he swings at everything.
05:01
He's out within forty five seconds.
05:05
Well, that's the modern game, Scott.
05:06
And that's part of baseball's problem now is that they have taught batters that that
05:13
hitting the ball out of the park is the primary goal and making contact and getting on
05:18
base and all that stuff and moving the runners and all that stuff means less than if you
05:24
hit the ball, it's got to go out of the park.
05:26
And that's why you can have a circumstance where somebody could be, you know, a 50 home
05:31
run guy and a hundred and forty four RBI guy or whatever, and he only hits two thirty.
05:37
I mean, that happens or some approximation that happens in Major League Baseball every
05:42
year now because that's what they've been taught.
05:45
And so that's how you wind up to some extent.
05:47
That's how you wind up with a guy hitting 090 in in postseason baseball.
05:52
I agree with you that that will be a part of his memory.
05:55
However, he does get the chance, I don't think this year, but he get the chance next
06:01
year and he still has several years after that where he'll be considered to be in his
06:04
prime where he can change the narrative.
06:07
But he has to change it.
06:09
If it stays like this, this will haunt his his legacy without a doubt.
06:14
If if there hadn't been the to the 2006 season for Peyton Manning, then with the Colts,
06:22
then that's what they would remember in Indy, is that he was as great a regular season
06:26
quarterback as anyone's ever been.
06:28
But then the postseason came along and he didn't get it done.
06:31
If it hadn't been for them getting that Super Bowl, that's what people would think about.
06:36
But he got that one and then he kind of got the one.
06:39
You got to give him some credit for the one in Denver several years later.
06:43
And as a result of that, that's not what people think about when they think about Peyton
06:47
Manning. But it came very close.
06:49
And that's why I have to say about Judge that he's not going to change it this year, almost
06:54
certainly, but he'll have to change it himself in the next couple of years.
07:00
This year, what are you, a comedian?
07:02
Like, hey, hey, we have we saw that we saw the Red Sox come from four down.
07:07
We did. We did. We saw it happen.
07:09
It didn't happen.
07:10
So you are not going to happen.
07:13
But I have to I have to allow for the possibility.
07:16
It's not that's not happening.
07:17
All right. So let me ask you this question really quick.
07:20
Ohio State's playing Penn State in Happy Valley and they've owned them.
07:26
They have owned them like no other.
07:29
The quarterback, Howard, said he grew up a Penn State fan his whole life from
07:34
Pennsylvania and they didn't want him.
07:35
He wasn't good enough to play at Penn State.
07:38
Will that kid get the revenge that he seeks on Saturday?
07:42
And will Indiana handle their business at East Lansing and then against Michigan
07:48
and Bloomington to go into the game in Columbus 10 and 0?
07:52
You know, it's interesting because this is a huge game for Ohio State because I
07:56
don't know whether they can make the playoff with two losses.
07:59
It's it's possible.
08:01
But I think that that concern has to be out there for them.
08:05
So every game has great urgency for Ohio State now.
08:09
And they do have the advantage or apparent advantage that Drew Aller, the fine
08:14
quarterback for Penn State, appears to be affected by some level of injury.
08:20
We'll see on Saturday whether he's himself.
08:23
But that's that's a factor that might be in the Buckeyes favor.
08:26
But they certainly will have to play better than they did last Saturday against
08:30
Nebraska. And so I think Ohio State will play better and I do think they will win.
08:37
But the Aller question is the one that's hanging over Penn State.
08:40
As for Indiana, I do think that they will arrive in Columbus at 10 and 0.
08:45
I think that this last Saturday, having to play without their number one quarterback
08:49
and being able to win still decisively against a pretty solid Washington team says
08:54
that they're going to get there.
08:55
But they have to pay attention to they have to pay attention to the tail.
09:01
They can't allow them to get themselves to start thinking about going to Columbus with
09:06
a perfect record. They have to focus, as they have really well, over the course of the
09:11
first eight weeks of the season.
