It's just, it's not a good look.
00:02
Anthony Jones and Colston Loveland
00:04
are jawing at each other.
00:06
Looks like Jones kind of takes a swipe
00:09
at the face mask of Loveland.
00:14
Loveland follows with a headbutt.
00:17
And then Jones grabs him on both sides of the helmet
00:22
and kind of throws him to the side and on the ground.
00:25
And then all hell breaks loose
00:27
because the entire Michigan sideline
00:30
came out onto the field.
00:33
And Michigan State sideline did not.
00:36
In fact, the Michigan State players
00:38
didn't come running over
00:39
to get involved with this initially.
00:42
Initially, it was all maize and blue
00:47
going after Michigan State,
00:49
going after Anthony Jones in particular.
00:51
And then the coaches come out on the field,
00:54
there's staffers on the field,
00:56
and they're all trying to keep people back.
00:59
And for the Michigan State side,
01:00
they did a great job of that,
01:01
of not getting other players involved.
01:04
But when you're watching it unfold,
01:07
you do see Michigan players taking liberties
01:09
with some people wearing green,
01:11
whether it was a jersey or just a green jacket
01:15
because they're a staffer.
01:17
And it looks like Kal-El Mullings,
01:20
Samaj Morgan, that they are a couple of players
01:25
that are involved in something
01:26
that looks a little bit more than just extracurricular,
01:30
and that maybe at some point
01:31
we could hear something from the Big 10
01:34
if they wanted to hand down any kind of suspensions.
01:37
Nothing was handed out during the game,
01:39
which is kind of crazy when you think of it this way,
01:42
but the clock is still ticking while this is going on,
01:46
while there are players on the Michigan sideline
01:49
coming onto the field while the clock is still ticking.
01:52
I'm not gonna complain too much about this.
01:54
I'm really not, because I'm over it.
01:57
State lost the game.
02:00
Yes, people want to make comparisons
02:02
to what happened a couple of years ago
02:03
with the tunnel incident,
02:05
and I thought that was way over the top
02:08
the way it was handled by Harbaugh,
02:12
by Ward-Manuel, by the attorney general,
02:17
by everybody involved with that.
02:19
I thought it was way over the top,
02:22
the way that it was handled,
02:25
the way that this was handled afterwards,
02:26
it's almost like it didn't happen,
02:28
which is kind of strange.
02:29
Nobody's really talking about it.
02:31
Jonathan Smith didn't pound the table.
02:33
Alan Halloran, the athletic director from Michigan State,
02:36
he wasn't pounding a table.
02:37
Nobody's on the phone with law enforcement to make,
02:40
nobody's trying to,
02:41
let's gather all the cell phone evidence we have,
02:44
none of that's going on,
02:46
and yet it's basically the same thing,
02:49
except one happened in a tunnel
02:52
and one happens on the field,
02:54
and when it happened in the tunnel a couple of years ago,
02:55
I said on the air that had this happened
03:00
100 feet west of the tunnel and on the field,
03:04
that nothing would've happened.
03:06
It would've just been, oh, yep,
03:07
heat of the moment, guys are upset,
03:09
fights happen, it's just football,
03:11
because that's kind of what it was.
03:13
I know Michigan fans always go,
03:14
well, we don't throw helmets at players and all this,
03:16
and they were getting up and it was unprovoked.
03:18
It wasn't unprovoked, and yeah,
03:20
helmet swinging, that gets a little bit too much,
03:23
and players were suspended for the rest of the season
03:25
from the Michigan State side.
03:28
Players were brought up on charges a couple years ago,
03:31
which was kind of ridiculous when you look back at it.
03:34
I'm not calling for anybody to be brought up on charges.
03:37
Should there be an investigation by the Big Ten
03:39
to see whether or not Mullings or others
03:41
deserve to be suspended for a game?
03:44
Sure, I think that should happen.
03:47
I know Michigan won't do it proactively.
03:50
That never happens.
03:52
Like, I don't know, for instance,
03:54
maybe when you have a player on your team
03:56
that got arrested for speeding in an area,
03:57
and then there's a gun in the car.
04:00
I know they won't address it right away proactively.
04:04
They got a big game coming up Saturday.
04:06
They can't do it proactively.
04:07
They can't suspend them.
04:10
But that's a little bit of my green and white side
04:12
coming out, and as I try to calm down,
04:15
I will tell you all that I don't think
04:17
what happened on Saturday night was a huge deal.
04:20
The problem is the precedent was set a couple years ago
04:23
when, again, it was a similar incident,
04:25
and it was made like it was the biggest deal in the world.
04:28
That's a problem.
04:29
I will also tell you this.
04:31
There continues to be a problem at Michigan Stadium
04:35
of keeping the teams away from each other.
04:40
Michigan's sideline had no business
04:41
coming out into the field, and yet they did,
04:43
and this was towards the end of the game.
04:46
But at halftime, there was also an issue
04:49
as Michigan players were trying to get up the tunnel
04:52
while Michigan State had not gotten to the tunnel yet
04:54
or hadn't finished going through the tunnel yet,
04:56
and there's nobody there to stop them.
04:59
The officials on the, the referees,
05:01
the guys wearing the black and white,
05:03
they were the ones that had to stop that from happening
05:05
because there could have been something
05:07
that happened at halftime.
05:08
Fortunately, there wasn't, but I thought over the years
05:11
that we've learned things, specifically at that stadium,
05:15
that you need to keep the players away from each other,
05:18
particularly at halftime and post-game.
05:21
But that was a problem there.
05:23
So what does this mean in the long run?
05:26
Probably not a whole lot.
05:27
Maybe a Michigan player or two, maybe they get suspended.
05:31
We'll see.
05:32
If not, I'm not gonna cry about it.
05:34
It is what it is.
05:35
It's football.
05:37
I don't think it's that big of a deal.
05:39
But could it be deserving of a suspension?
05:41
Yeah, if they look into it.
05:43
Will the Big Ten even look into it?
05:44
I don't know.
05:46
Will the NCAA do anything about it?
05:48
Probably not.
05:49
And instead, you're gonna have a game on Saturday
05:52
in Ann Arbor, Michigan taking on Oregon,
05:54
and they might take some serious lumps in that game
05:57
because Michigan has no offense.
06:00
And Michigan's vaunted defense, they're good, not great.
06:04
And I'm not even sure how good they are.
06:06
They're definitely good, but it's not like they're,
06:09
oh, they're just this close.
06:10
No, they're not anywhere near
06:11
what you thought they were gonna be.
06:13
They're a pretty decent defense,
06:15
but it's nowhere near what they were last year.
06:18
Now, it sounds like to me that you don't think
06:20
this should be made a bigger deal than it is.
06:22
Correct.
06:23
After the game, stuff to kneel down.
06:25
But something did happen.
06:27
And with that being said, and we know the history,
06:29
the tunnel, and everything like that,
06:31
I'm asking you, do you think the rivalry
06:34
has gotten too toxic at all?
06:37
No.
06:37
Okay, that stuff was just football in your mind.
06:40
It wasn't like anything.
06:41
It is a rivalry.
06:42
These teams hate each other.
06:43
The fan base hates each other?
06:44
The fan base hates each other.
06:45
It's just, it's a rivalry, right?
06:47
And the fan base hates each other
06:48
during the course of the game.
06:50
And nobody, but before the game,
06:52
we're friends with the other side, right?
06:55
Michigan fans have Michigan State fans as friends,
06:59
and vice versa.
07:00
I wasn't there.
07:02
Normally, I go to this game, but I didn't go
07:03
because it was a night game,
07:04
and I just didn't wanna deal with it.
07:06
If it were a 3.30 kick, I would've been there.
07:07
If it were a noon kick, I would've been there,
07:09
and I would've been reveling with my Michigan friends.
07:11
We've been having beers together before the game,
07:14
sharing a brat, whatever the case,
07:15
we would've had a great time.
07:17
And after the game, we would've gotten back to the cars,
07:20
and I had a post-game beverage or whatever,
07:23
or it means a Coke Zero.
07:26
We would've been fine.
07:28
But during the game, it's different.
07:31
The switch goes on, and everybody's in combat mode.
07:34
It is what it is.
07:35
It's a rivalry.
07:37
And there's no hiding from it.
07:40
The Michigan players admit afterwards,
07:44
hey, they're a big rival of ours,
07:45
and things get heated, and that's just what happens.
07:48
Colston Loveland had the little brother comments
07:51
on the field after the game,
07:52
and then he walked it back a little bit later on
07:54
and said, hey, I may have gone a little too far with that,
07:57
and then started giving some accolades to Michigan State,
07:59
and said, look, it's just a rivalry.
08:01
It is, it's just the rivalry.
08:02
Stupid things are said, stupid things are done.
08:05
It happens Auburn, Alabama.
08:07
It happens Michigan, Ohio State.
08:08
It happens Michigan, Michigan State.
08:10
It happens everywhere when it gets to rivalry games.
08:13
I don't think it's toxic.
08:14
Okay, yeah, I mean, I just wanna throw it out there.
08:16
I'm not saying it is or isn't.
08:17
I just wanna get your thoughts on that,
08:19
because things have happened the last few years more.
08:21
I don't know if it seems more than other times,
08:23
but maybe it's just recency bias,
08:24
that it's happening right now, so I'm not reacting.
08:27
But you and Doug know how I feel about college football
08:31
and college football fans.
08:32
Y'all are crazy.
08:33
Y'all are crazy.
08:34
Y'all are crazy.
08:34
And that's part of what makes college football unique
08:37
from the pros, you know?
08:37
I think it's different between,
08:39
yeah, that's the difference between college and pros
08:41
is that you have this connection to your school,
08:44
and it's not like Lions fans
08:46
don't have a connection to the Lions.
08:48
But it's totally, yeah, you don't.
08:50
And there's nothing wrong with that,
08:51
and that's why I want the two,
08:53
I can be able to distinguish
08:54
between college football and pro football.
08:56
Just because I'm a pro football guy
08:57
more than college football
08:58
doesn't mean I don't like college football,
09:00
but I like the differences.
09:01
And nowadays, you know, with NIL
09:03
and everything going on with money and the contracts,
09:06
the lines are being blurred more,
09:07
and it's becoming professional sports,
09:08
and I don't wanna lose what college football is.
09:11
And honestly, what part of college football is
09:12
is these great rivalries.
09:13
Yeah.
09:14
Gotta keep them in check, though.
09:15
And it is a great rival.
