And in Mexico, the so-called International Book Fair began.
00:04
Correspondent Daniela Rosas has more details.
00:09
When April traveled from the port of Veracruz to Mexico City to spend a few days of rest
00:13
with her family, she never imagined that she would find an international book fair that
00:17
would impress her in such a way.
00:21
I have never seen such a magnitude of books.
00:23
I am a fan of reading and all that, and I am really excited to see so many people, so
00:28
many books, and so many publishers.
00:35
These halls, located in the heart of Mexico, are filled with offers of all kinds of books.
00:40
But there is also art, games, and, of course, music.
00:49
Families, couples, individuals, all recognize the value of the fair that brings together
01:00
both large and small publishers in Mexico's main public square.
01:06
Every time the book fair is on, I come because I like to read a lot.
01:12
So I always come to see what new books we can take with us.
01:18
And we even start to introduce her to reading.
01:25
There are big publishing houses, also many bookshops, and also, as is my case, independent
01:31
publishers and independent writers.
01:36
Since the left has governed the Mexican capital, the fair has developed and is now in its 24-edition.
01:42
It has even been a witness and support in the face of disasters, as in 2017 when an
01:47
earthquake paralyzed central Mexico.
01:51
Ten days later we inaugurated the Zócalo Fair.
01:55
It was dedicated to the rescuers and volunteers and there was a memorial space as well, so
01:59
that people could have that closeness and that affection and that empathy.
02:06
But the International Book Fair in the Zócalo is also a space where governmental and social
02:11
organizations promote reading and specialized topics.
02:15
Our objective is to distribute our material, we bring everything at 50%, it's just to
02:20
recover the cost of the book.
02:27
The focus is feminisms, social justice, indigenous struggles, LGBT struggles.
02:36
And we always try to prioritize women's voices, peripheral voices, authors, or people
02:41
who have always been ignored.
02:47
The International Book Fair in the Zócalo is considered the second most important in
02:50
Mexico, only after the Guadalajara Fair, due to the number of people it attracts.
