Landmarks achieved but some ways yet for true gender equality in Malaysia, says Queen

00:00Her Majesty, Raja Zarit Sophia, Queen of Malaysia,

00:04emphasized that while Malaysia has made considerable progress in advancing

00:08women's rights,

00:09the journey toward full equality is far from complete.

00:12As we look towards the future,

00:15Malaysia is setting ambitious targets that will propel us further

00:20along the path of gender equality and women's empowerment.

00:24Some of these goals and strategies being implemented

00:28to achieve them include achieving 100%

00:32secondary school completion rates for girls by 2030,

00:36increasing women's representation in Parliament to 30%

00:40by 2028, reducing the gender pay gap

00:44to less than 5% by 2030,

00:47and ensuring that 40% of senior management positions

00:52are held by women by 2035.

00:56Together, we can create a Malaysia where every girl completes her education,

01:02where women's voices are equally represented in our highest decision-making bodies,

01:07where equal pay receives equal work,

01:10where equal work receives equal pay,

01:12and where women lead our organisations in equal measure to many.

01:18To achieve these goals, we need collaborative effort from all sectors of society.

01:24And I call upon everyone, leaders, entrepreneurs and change-makers

01:29to join in this noble pursuit.

01:32Let us work together to build a world where every woman and girl

01:36can reach her full potential.

01:39Speaking at the 2024 World Women Economic and Business Summit and Awards in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday,

01:45Her Majesty highlighted Malaysia's significant legislative and policy advancements

01:49in promoting gender equality.

01:52We have strengthened laws against gender-based discrimination and sexual harassment,

01:58ensuring safer workplaces and public spaces for women.

02:02Our Women in Leadership Programme has also successfully increased

02:06female representation in corporate boardrooms

02:10from 16% in 2017 to 28% today,

02:15with a target of 30% by the year 2025.

02:20Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Syukri,

02:25in her welcome address titled,

02:27Power and Parity, Rewriting the Rules for the Future,

02:31stressed that her speech was not merely a call to action,

02:34but a mandate for transformative change in Malaysia's landscape.

02:38I would like to emphasise the importance of intensifying our efforts

02:42to achieve gender equality.

02:46Our actions must be guided by the understanding that

02:49women's meaningful participation in all areas of public life,

02:54particularly in the economy,

02:56is not only beneficial for women,

02:59but also for men,

03:01family and society as a whole.

03:04At the summit, star media group, SMG,

03:07was honoured with the Outstanding World Media Award for advancing and championing women's issues.

03:12The group's Chief Content Officer, Datin Paduka Esther Ang,

03:15remarked that the award is especially meaningful as SMG has consistently been

03:20at the forefront of advocating for women's rights and gender equality.

03:24She added that the group remains committed to nation building,

03:27and will continue to push for recognition of women's contributions and leadership.
