00:00A gas explosion at a coal mine in Iran's South Khorasan province has claimed the lives of

00:07at least 51 people and injured 20 others, according to state media reports on Sunday.

00:14The explosion, caused by a buildup of methane gas, occurred in two sections, Blocks B and

00:20C, of the mine operated by the Madanju Company, the reports confirmed.

00:25Ali Akbar Rahimi, governor of South Khorasan province, told state television that the region

00:31is responsible for supplying 76% of the country's coal with 8 to 10 major companies, including

00:38Madanju, operating in the area.

00:40The rescue operation in Block B has been completed.

00:44Rahimi reported that of the 47 workers present in that section, 30 were killed and 17 were

00:51injured.

00:52He further stated that efforts to rescue those in Block C had begun, but high methane levels

00:58in the area would likely delay the operation by three to four hours.

01:02President Massoud Pazeshkian extended his condolences to the victims' families and ordered

01:08a formal investigation before leaving for the UN General Assembly in New York.
