Onshore winds and rain linger in New England

Parts of New England had lingering rainfall and strong coastal winds on Sept. 20, but more rain is expected across the Northeast in the days to come.

00:00Let's go to New England now near the coastline.

00:02That strong wind and coastal flooding at Cape Cod has been interesting to watch here near

00:06Sandwich driving some seawater inland.

00:09That's right Jeff.

00:10Now some parts of the Northeast have been seeing record dry starts here so far for the

00:13month including Boston.

00:15But the good news is here as we take a look at our radar over the past couple of hours

00:18you can see this area of low pressure just off the coast.

00:21That onshore flow is bringing moisture and that moisture is developing some showers,

00:26even some light rainfall here across the eastern portions of Massachusetts.

00:30So that's good.

00:31But the thing is we have another front that's pushing its way across the Great Lakes.

00:35That's what's going to bring the best chance of rainfall here across the Northeast as we

00:38head throughout the weekend.

00:40So how much rainfall are we expected to see?

00:42Well once again that area of low pressure is going to bring the most rain here across

00:46parts of Massachusetts, even Rhode Island, maybe even eastern parts of Connecticut.

00:50But that front as it makes its way across the Great Lakes is going to bring some much

00:54needed beneficial rainfall for western New York, central PA, even down through parts

00:58of West Virginia.

01:00And this area here of western West Virginia and southeastern Ohio, they are in an exceptional

01:06drought so they will take every drop of rainfall we can get here out of these systems and these

01:11fronts as they make their way through this weekend.

01:14So the overall setup for Saturday you can see that blink and you'll miss it, squint

01:17and you'll miss it, that little sliver of green right there on eastern Massachusetts.

01:21That's where we'll see some of those showers but most of the heavy rainfall will be along

01:25the front stretching from Buffalo, western PA for Pittsburgh down through Charleston.

01:29That's where we'll see the best chance of organized rainfall here for Saturday.

01:32On the back side of that high pressure will take over and we'll actually see some warming

01:36conditions here for your Saturday afternoon.

01:38But then as we head into Sunday that warming is slowly going to translate to the east as

01:42the area of high pressure dominates.

01:44We will still see some lingering rain chances there, possibly some storms stretching from

01:49central PA down through Baltimore, Washington, Virginia Beach, we'll watch out for that.

01:53But still on the back side warm weather developing with another front bringing more rainfall

01:58chances into Chicago primarily so Chicago is going to be rainy there on Sunday so heads

02:03up for that.

02:04In the meantime here for your Saturday afternoon you can see some of the impacts here of the

02:07rainfall, only 62 in Boston.

02:10The farther west you go, the farther southwest you go, the warmer the highs will be including

02:1492 Saturday for Columbus.

02:17It's going to be a hot day out there where Ohio State is.

02:20So as we head into Sunday, some cooler air pushing in but overall we're still going to

02:24see some hot areas for Columbus and Charleston.

02:27But DC, Virginia Beach we'll see some rain cooled 70s, Boston, Portland some 60s here

02:32so definitely going to see some off air, offshore winds cooling things down.
