Hiroyuki Sanada caught up with Billboard’s Tetris Kelly on the red carpet of the 2024 Emmy Awards.

00:00To be on a show that's nominated for 25 Emmys as the lead actor, how are you feeling tonight?

00:05What's your energy?

00:06I'm so excited, so happy to be here.

00:09As a producer and as an actor both, it's a great experience in my life.

00:16And then for it to be adopted from a book, how do you feel like that was to approach

00:20that when you have people that you know are going to read the book and say this changed

00:23or you know, those kind of things?

00:25Yeah, based on the novel, James Carvel's great novel, so we respect the novel, but

00:30also we arranged a little bit more Japanese eyes in the script, so easy to understand

00:38for foreigners too.

00:41But also, it's a fictional entertainment, that's why we wanted to make authentic as

00:49much as possible to make story and character believable.

00:54Activity is so important, and what do you feel like it is about the show that resonated

00:58with people so well?

01:00Yeah, it was like a gamble for us, you know, 70% Japanese dialogue means, you know, how

01:11can they react to, especially another culture, but we believed the audience, their intelligence

01:21and imagination, and I believe it worked.

01:26It definitely worked.

01:27I'd like to thank all the viewers in the world, they made this happen.

01:36And then of course, we're Billboard, so if you could think of a musician that you would

01:39have come on the show, who would you have, guest star?

01:43Oh, yeah, all welcome, but the Spanish guitarist or something playing in the show, that must

01:52be great, or collaboration with the Japanese traditional, you know, strings or drums.

01:59Okay, nice, nice, good choices.

02:01And then of course, you're a very busy man, but is there a show that you're watching that

02:05you're excited about to come back this fall?

02:07Oh, just a TV show that you enjoy watching that you're excited to see the next season?

02:12Oh, yeah.

02:14Myself, you know, I want to see what's going to happen for the next season.

02:20We just started to prepare, but in my mind, I can see some vision.
