Presidential debates have become a familiar feature of the American political landscape. Vice-President Kamala Harris clashes with Republican challenger Donald Trump in her first debate as the Democratic nominee. Viewers are now left to decide if there was a clear winner.

00:00There's a good reason Donald Trump and Kamala Harris had never met before today's debate.

00:08Donald Trump refused to concede he'd lost the 2020 election, he would not invite Harris

00:13and Biden to the White House during the transition, and Trump left town rather than attend their

00:19inauguration.

00:20But this debate was not about introducing Harris to Trump.

00:24It was Harris's introduction to the American people.

00:28For the first time, a woman of colour was on that debate stage, asking to be the Commander-in-Chief

00:34of the American people.

00:35Could she stand toe-to-toe with the unpredictable showman who defeated Hillary Clinton, the

00:41first woman nominated to the presidency?

00:43And also saw off President Joe Biden, who looked so frail and feeble in their June debate.

00:48Could Harris look like a president?

00:51We'll know the ultimate answer to that in November, of course, but for now, polls show

00:55almost two-thirds of American viewers think that Harris won this debate.
