Court hears Steven Hainsworth told woman he 'bashed' old man

An alleged serial killer told a woman that he "bashed" and "killed" a Mount Gambier pensioner before stealing and selling his belongings, a Supreme Court has heard.

00:09The court heard the pensioner's body was found several weeks after the alleged killing,

00:13with rubbish strewn over his body.

00:15Mr Hainsworth is also accused of murdering Phyllis Harrison in 1998 and Beverly Hanley

00:20in 2010 in Adelaide, a trial viewing taking place at Mr Newton's old home on Wednesday.

00:26Another witness, Sharon Ellard, told the court Mr Hainsworth said he had video games

00:30to sell he obtained by bashing an old man.

00:33He said he's bashed him and had killed him.

00:36Another witness, Paul Tucker, said the accused asked whether he knew if Mr Newton had any

00:41valuables in his house before the alleged bashing.

00:44Mr Tucker told him he had a big TV.

00:47The court had previously heard Mr Newton's television was discovered missing after his

00:51death.

00:52Mr Hainsworth was jailed in 2012 for bashing Mr Tucker after he told police about the

00:56interaction.

00:57He told me to change my statement.

01:00The court heard a friend of Mr Hainsworth's helped him sell video games that had Mr Newton's

01:05name etched on them, along with other items that appeared to come from his house.

01:09That friend also told the court Mr Hainsworth wanted the money for food and cigarettes.

01:14Through questioning, the accused's lawyers suggested to the court another man may have

01:18committed the murder, and that media articles had tainted people's recollections of the

01:22events before and after Mr Newton's death.
