00:00Today we are at Horse World, so we are a equine rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing charity
00:07here in Bristol.
00:08So, sort of the day-to-day running of things, we have, I think there's about 16 grooms that
00:15work on a rotor, so we have the rounds, so you go out and every single horse gets checked
00:21every single day, making sure they're happy, healthy, they've got no physical problems,
00:25but also with the mental side of it, we conduct the welfare assessments, so we're quite big
00:30on making sure that the five domains of animal welfare are met.
00:33So we work entirely on donation-based, we rely entirely on our amazing supporters.
00:40We obviously need the income for our day-to-day work, so we have normally over 100 horses
00:47on site, which is a lot of hungry bellies, especially when they're the size of lollies,
00:53hungry bellies to feed, we have vets bills every month, we have farrier bills every month,
00:58so there's a lot of support needed for that ongoing day-to-day care.
01:04So this is Spud, he is approximately three years old now, I believe, he was rescued in
01:112021 from a larger group, I think there was about seven of them, really young foals that
01:17had been abandoned somewhere, so way too young to be away from his mum, and somewhere where they
01:23just had nothing, they had no food, no water, so the RSPCA removed him and we took him and two of
01:30his friends. You know, we do a lot of behaviour observations, making sure that Spud agrees,
01:38making sure that what we are seeing is, you know, is happy and healthy for those horses and
01:43trying to implement things if we do see that there's anything wrong.
01:47And tell me about the grooming then, what is that process?
01:50So we groom our horses to keep them clean and make sure that we're checking them over,
01:55making sure they've got no skin problems or anything like that, so you can give them a
02:00little brush, he quite enjoys a fuss, so yeah, and then yeah, just give them a brush.
02:07Is there benefits for humans being around horses?
02:10Yeah, so I think there's a lot of research that has gone into looking at the effect that horses
02:16can have, and I think it's why equine assisted services are so popular, because they can really
02:21help you relax and control your emotions, and just being around another living creature is just
02:27really beneficial as we know, so yeah, I think we get a lot from it as well as them.
02:32We are so lucky in that we have amazing support from local individuals, local communities,
02:38local businesses, however, we all know that the cost of living is going up, and our costs are
02:46going up as well, our feed bills are going up, our farriery bills, our vet bills, our day-to-day
02:52costs just keep going up, so we're in need of support now more than ever to be honest.
